You guys would be happy if the 70-300L would cost $1K? That's a 200% markup from the non L for full time manual, a non rotating front element, 1 more stop of IS, weather sealing, and a marginal improvement in image quality? I know the list sounds big but for a $500 premium it really doesn't seem to me like there is all that much usefulness to be gained unless you need to use a cpl or need weather sealing...
The 70-200 f2.8 IS II had a $500 markup from the 70-200 f2.8 IS and it didn't introduce anything except a "marginal improvement in image quality", and 1 more stop of IS, yet they are flying off the shelves (Canon actually reports a shortage of them) and those lenses have received nothing but praise despite the high price. If MTF charts from Canon are at all consistent the new 70-300 will have the IQ to match the 70-200 f4 IS and 70-200 f2.8 IS II.
