Hey guys, I went out to Manhattan to build up on a portfolio that I have to submit to a college I want to apply. Here are some shots that I took while on my journey in the city. C&C would be very nice. Also tips on how to build on a portfolio would be nice.

Oh and also another note for people who are living in NYC: Where are some nice places to go to in Manhattan to take pictures of?

Are there any books on "Street Photography"?

More can be seen in my Flickr:

Slow down the shutter more for the first shot. Long blurred lines really capture the bustle of NY's bridges

Not going to critique 13 photos, so here are some random thoughts,

The third is the best of the bunch. It's a good take on the classic Brooklyn Bridge shot.

The skater shots would have been better if something were in focus. I get that you're trying to portray motion, but because nothing is in focus these just end up looking like misfires.

The 2 in the second post are out of focus and cropped/framed too tight. I assume these are hip shots. That's fine. I do it from time to time in my work. But you still have to have some semblance of composition and focus.

The same applies to the last shot. At least this one is in focus.

Sorry, but in the "Share" areas IMAGE POSTING RULES only allow 2 attachments by the OP per thread, OR 8 embedded (linked) images, OR a combination of both totaling 8 per thread. (Maximum 1024 pixels on any side.) You can always just post a link to more, though, or better yet, post a link to a gallery so we don't have to click on each image link.
Some exceptions are group threads, like "Show Me...", "Post your best...", equipment reviews, Tutorials, etc.
You may add a few additional photos if requested, but only in a reply to other member's post and request.

What is your portfolio

FrankC - 20D, RAW, Manual everything...
Classic Carz, Racing, Air Show, Flowers.
Find the light... A few Car Lighting Tips, and MOVE YOUR FEET!
Have you thought about making your own book? // Need an exposure crutch?
New Image Size Limits: Image must not exceed 1600 pixels on any side.

#1 i love it

#2, 5, 6 might have benefitted from getting in closer to the subjects

#3 bear with me.. i'm not really understanding the point of this photo. to me, i can't tell if the bridge lines are supposed to be relevant or if the cars blurring by is supposed to be the center of attention. would this have been better done at night with long headlight/taillight trails? maybe pull out more and get more cars in the shot? I'm not sure but something is telling me you could strengthen this.

#4 its cool but could probably benefit from isolating the subject more from the background. theres a lot going on back there.

you're off to a great start though i really like what you're going for there. i like that you're trying to capture a moment rather than just going for the technical bits. good job.

thanks for the input. For pic 3, I tried to take those light trail/slow shutter pictures of cares but those metal bars kind of ruined it...

I'm pretty shy when it comes to taking pictures of random people in the city and it's VERY awkward when people are looking straight at me when I'm trying to take pictures of them. I try to have some distance between the subject and me and shoot with my zoom. If you guys take street photography, what is or are your approach(es)? Keep the critiques coming in :D
