I currently have the 100-400L lens, but I've been hearing all kind of great things about the 70-200 f/2.8L. Just wondering if anyone out there has both lenses, and could give me any insight into whether I'd be better off with the 70-200 and a 2x teleconverter as opposed to the 100-400. With the 2x teleconverter, will I:

-still have faster AF?
-still have sharper shots?

It seems like a smart trade to me...

as for sharpness, the-digital-picture has some shots of the ISO test chart you can do a visual comparison between.

you don't state which 70-200, (AIUI, the mkII is slightly better, and works take a x2 teleconverter much better than the MkI).

If you mean the 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2 lens then you can see some test shots comparing it to the 100-400mm L here: https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=869226

Later on in the thread there are even comparisons done on a 350D to show that its not all just 1D magic ;). Personally I would say its a worthwhile choice if you want a 70-200mm f2.8 capable lens in your bag. Otherwise its going to be a heft price on something that won't really (at the 400mm mark) improve what you have already.

PS Colin - how's the 70-200mm holding up?

Tools of the trade: Canon 400D, Canon 7D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8 IS L M2, Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS, Canon MPE 65mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro, Tamron 24-70mm f2.4, Sigma 70mm f2.8 macro, Sigma 8-16mm f4.5-5.6, Raynox DCR 250, loads of teleconverters and a flashy thingy too

As mentioned, there are currently three 70-200mm f/2.8L lenses in Canon's line up,.
It is hard for us to reply with any accuracy without knowing what lens is being discussed.

If it's either of the older ones, the answers to your questions would be;
No
No

But if it's the latest 70-200mm MkII, it seems to be a longer discussion.

Right, with the newest MkII versions of all these lenses, the 70-200mm and all of the big primes, and these matched new Version III T-Cons, the book has not been written yet on the capabilities...

ie> we have no idea!

PS Colin - how's the 70-200mm holding up?

Doing well, I've not used it much, but when i've used it, I've loved it, it's a good fit with my 24-70mm, right now. I don't know how much I'd use it after I've shot at the weddings I've got in the diary.

I meant the new 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, sorry about that.

Thanks for all the info, I'll wait for some reviews of the new teleconverters. :)

As it's the MkII you're talking about, then This comparision (external link) shows that the 2x is a little softer in the center and show CA at the edges and corners.

However, it doesn't state which of the 2x convertors are being used, so I'm eagerly awaiting a test with the new MkIII convertors.
