Hi everyone,

The shutter button on my 7D snapped off recently. (Don't ask how .... long story).

The plastic shaft that the shutter button 'sits on' broke. Basically the black domed cap (the actual button that your finger depresses when firing a shot) broke off. There was still about 5mm of shaft left protruding in the cavity left by the now absent button and would still take photos just fine.

I sent it into Canon N.Z. (and had the usual delays and bad service) and got a quote of NZ$540 saying that the whole top cover and top LCD screen needs replacing.

I've searched the inernet for a 7D parts catalogue but can't find one. Have found catalogues for several other EOS bodies and ALL of them show that the button and shaft (and associated few washers and rings) are completely separate from the casing and top window.

Does anyone know if this is the case with the 7D ?? I just can't believe that the whole upper casing and LCD window need to be replaced.

Any help/advice from any camera technicians out there would be great.

Thanks,

Matt.

ouch - sounds nasty. I'm not a tech but have had a few camera's in bits for either fixing or IR modding and generally if they don't list parts individually in the catalogs, then you have to buy a complete "service module"
I'll have a look and see if any of the parts websites I've come across have info about it.

Just a thought - would any of the film EOS bodies have similar parts? I have a EOS500 tucked away somewhere....

Thanks for the reply Joeseph. Any help/info you can find would be fantastic.

To me it seems like all that is needed is to take the top cover off and replace the button and shaft ..... completely separate components from the cover.

I also thought that perhaps the components in question might be the same as other models (50D, 450D etc) and could be sourced from someone who has other bodies for parts ??

Matt.

thought that's what you mean.. closest I've got in my stash of manuals/catalogs is a 5d parts list (excerpt below) the button itself is "NS" which presumably is non-stocked.

will keep an eye out for 7D stuff and give you a yell if I find any. I have a funny feeling I looked in vain a couple of months back for catalog for someone looking at replacing the LCD cover.

Guess other options are keep an eye out on trademe etc. for water damaged/dropped units that will likely have the actual part you need.
