Hi oldcanon, Ron

Thank you for the 'extra push' (towards the 7d)

Hi Pinnacle

Welcome.. You have very sharp shots (Ron, yours too).
I noticed you have a 500d.. Very encouraging to me (I have 500d too).
Mind if you share the exif? Thanks.

-Pete

Don't get me wrong the Tamron 18-270 has done me proud for my first 18 months with my DSLR and I have a number of friends who have bought it on my recommendation but it was the AF speed that was letting it down for as well indoor or not well lit shots hence the 50mm. For the money it is very very good as is the 70-300L.

I am out at the mo but they are on flickr so it should show on there just click on the picture, I usually shoot in Av as wide as I can and any PP is done with DPP and usually only 2 or 3 clicks of sharpness and 1 click saturation and a crop if required.

The 7D was on my list but went for the lens first and hoping the mk2 or 5D mk3 when or if released might bring SH prices down.

I'm having a tough time finding an aftermarket Tripod Ring...I don't want to spend the $250 for a Canon one...any ideas?

Just found that as well...I'm a little skeptical of the quality looking at the close-ups of the interior of the ring.

I may just have to wait for more knockoffs to hit the market.

Don't know about that.
If it fits a 100-400 it shouldn't fit the 70-300L because it's too small.
My 100-400 tripod ring is too small for the 70-300L so I don't see how it could fit.

About tripod rings - all the 3rd party ones I have seen have it marked as 70-200 compatible. A retailer of accessories here told me to wait until the 70-300 marked ones come out. He did not know timing but should not be long ??

A couple of shots from our local Heronry, the action is taking place at about 40ft up in the pine trees at around 150ft distance

Very nice, I took a couple yesterday and they were only about 10-15 feet away and nowhere are they even close to your quality or sharpness. I should start using a monopod.

3 of the better ones.

an interesting bird, we don't have those in the UK.

My shots are all hand-held - trust the IS and it does wonders (just realised, this sounds like "trust the force Bobobird" )

Haha.

I was standing on a floating dock and they were on the other side, and the dock rocks a bit. So stepped back on land took a detour to get to their side but the only angle darkish. Sat down and used knees to keep steady. Very very windy day and their feathers were just floating all over, a miracle that even these 3 came out relatively ok.

Could be much better for sure.

1 - has grass across the chest area and the only reason I did it was the other 2 taking off.

2 - not too bad but there are blown whites on the back

3 - nice pose etc but has a slight motion blur.

Ah well, I can always go back on a good day but that is a long journey.
