Here's a couple I took of the Rideau Canal.

If I could skate I would be on the canal as well, if only for the beavertails :p and maple syrup on a stick...... I'm just a terrible skater, but I did skate the entire canal one winter! Just slow going

Lots of good stuff lately!

bobo, excellent snowscapes. As Christina said, they really mimic sand dunes... cool.

Johnnie B, nice birdies. Good focus and feather detail.

Apricane, enjoyable photos from the canal... not something we see much of down here in the USA.

rbrosseau, nice job with freezing the fast action of the skater. Good colors, too.

Goose Merganser interaction

Hi,

A couple of months ago after trying to find an inexpensive longish zoom that would work for me (Canon 55-250, Canon 70-300 USM, 2 different Tamron 70-300 VCs). I decided to pay what I consider to be an exorbitant amount ($1300) for my Canon 70-300L. I'm glad that I did. I've been enjoying using it with my 60d for birds, wildlife, and sports. It's definitely much better for most things than my 55-250.

Last week I visited Adams Point in Durham New Hampshire hoping to photograph eagles with the 70-300L. Even though I didn't see eagles I enjoyed my visit. In particular there was an incident between a pair of Hooded Mergansers and a Canada Goose that I made me laugh. First I noticed this pair of hooded mergansers fishing and swimming along peacefully.

Next along came these bullies.

IMAGE: http://jack-dorsey.smugmug.com/Nature/Adams-Farm-Durham/i-r3sTXg6/0/L/IMG_1380-L.jpg

Talk about invading their space:

IMAGE: http://jack-dorsey.smugmug.com/Nature/Adams-Farm-Durham/i-X6wsK5k/1/L/IMG_1384-L.jpg

Well! The little female continued along right after him. I imagined here giving that goose a piece of her mind.

I edited my original post thanks to help I got here!

Jack, welcome. As for posting pics, here's a complicated guide to an easy process (lol):

1st: open 2 windows/tabs in your internet browser (IE or Firefox).
2nd: open Smug Mug in 1 window/tab and this thread in the other.
3rd: go to the photo you want to link from Smug Mug in the correct size (probably Large or XL), right click on the photo and select "Copy Image Location"
4th: come to this thread and click the "Post Reply" button
5th: click this icon------>>

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'text/html'

6th: right click in the dialogue box that pops up, select "Paste" and then "Ok"
7th: click on the "Preview Post" button to see what your post will look like before you actually reply.
8th: if you like what you see, hit the "Submit Reply" button. If you don't like it, make changes accordingly.

It seems complicated, but it's really easy and fast after you do it once.

Over a span of about 20 minutes or so, I got within 6ft of this guy. I took my time, watching his reaction, walking a little closer, etc. Found him at the barn where I board my horse - apparently he had been sitting on that fence all morning (it was about 2pm when I took these) so he had been there a long time - fast asleep. He only barely woke up when I got close, but otherwise seemed unconcerned about me being there. I've never seen a raccoon in person before. I thought it was strange that a nocturnal animal like this would choose to sleep in the open, completely exposed like that.

Either way, a lucky break for me as it gave me a completely compliant subject. But I hope he isn't sick or anything... :(

Thanks Monkey,

Great shots Christina.
I know little to nothing about racoons but judging by that dryish nose he could be less then 100% hopefully not. They are usually not all that afraid of humans and will come right up if you offer food.

The ones in Stanley Park (BC) walk up even if you do not offer food. LOL

Your instructions seems to be working with Firefox but my attempt with Internet Explorer on Windows 8 failed.

Sorry for posting so many but I'm trying to figure out how to make it work with the Internet Explorer on Windows 8. These pictures were taken at the New Hampshire Seacoast.

IMAGE: http://jack-dorsey.smugmug.com/Nature/Odiorne/i-WJBjnVF/0/XL/IMG_9432-XL.jpg

IMAGE: http://jack-dorsey.smugmug.com/Nature/Odiorne/i-jgBkXv4/0/XL/IMG_9408-XL.jpg

IMAGE: http://jack-dorsey.smugmug.com/Nature/Odiorne/i-hdgDjRr/0/XL/IMG_9409-XL.jpg

These were done using internet explorer! Looks like I've got it figured out. The changes I had to make was to right click on the image in smugmug and select copy. The when copying that url into the posting mechanism here I needed to remove an extra http at the front of the url.
