I took this lens with me on a trip to NZ in December and got some fun shots of yellow eyed penguins. This is a pretty heavy crop. I'm very impressed with the IS and IQ of this lens!

Cute penguin :) Thats one of the things I love about this lens, it resolves detail so well that I find myself totally unconcerned if I need to crop heavily on something.

So a few months ago I rented a 200mm f/2 L from my college. I rented it again this weekend and took it out today. It's a fun lens for sure (as any lens that costs almost $6000 would be, - placebo effect), but something I noticed today after spending much time with the 70-300L in between the times I rented the 200mm - the IS on the 200mm f/2 L just does NOT compare. Its jittery, loud, and not very stable at all. I was surprised actually. I can't remember when the 200mm f/2 L was released so it could just be outdated IS compared to the newer 70-300L, but man.... the 70-300L's IS is pretty outstanding :D

CaliWA, nice penguin... sounds like a great trip. Would like to see more if you have any.

Christina, I hope to shoot one of the big 200's some day, just for the experience if anything else, lol. Speaking of loud/clunky IS, I think I recall the same sound/feeling from the couple of 100-400L's I've owned in the past. Great lens, but that IS is kinda funky after shooting more modern IS lenses.

Sure :). Here's a landscape taken with the 70-300L. I'm not totally happy with my processing on this one. The dynamic range takes some subtle control that I've yet to master in Lightroom.

breathtaking image!

what is it you feel you're not able to do with Lightroom, as compared to how you'd like the image to look like? I personally think the PP on this image is spot on.

If I could skate I would be on the canal as well, if only for the beavertails :p and maple syrup on a stick...... I'm just a terrible skater, but I did skate the entire canal one winter! Just slow going

Hehe, I was practically born with skates on my feet, although I've lost the habit, not having skated for years on end...this time, last time I skated was back in 2009. Still, I wasn't on the ice with a 70-300L, and I couldn't understand the people I saw who had their white lenses out on the Canal when it was so crowded.

That being said, here's a few pics I took last weekend...hopefully my first flickr post will turn out well.

Thanks. I feel like it's a touch dark, but LR's gradiated filter is a bit too broad a brush and I'm terrible at using the spot tool. This shot was taken pretty casually while we were on the side of the road having a picnic, and only after I got home did I see the little faults in the foreground that I've worked to mask (by making it too dark, imo). I think Flickr may also be making the image darker than I see in LR, which doesn't help! But I'm glad to see my nits aren't bothering others.

Hmm, I don't know. Going from my own images, I'd say Flickr doesn't make them darker. I might be slightly biased on your picture, since I usually like my landscapes to be slightly underexposed for the benefit of better contrast. Still, I get what your dilemma is, especially considering that trees are quite hard to work around, even in Photoshop.

Apricane, love that last one, the blurred background colours complete the photo perfectly. Maybe go for a slightly tighter crop to get rid of that straggly bit of branch bottom left?

Time to Start Training Again

Hi,

For the last few years around this time of year I've made the transition from winter exercise consisting mostly of cross country skiing with occasional runs to mostly running so that I can be ready of the racing season. The last two years it has started with a marathon at the end of May.

Yesterday I made the transition. I mostly start my runs from Campton Pond where I take a large number of pictures. Campton pond is created by a dam on the Mad River that comes out of Waterville Valley NH. Generally I start by running 1/2 mile next to the pond where I look for things to photograph then complete the rest of whatever I've planned.

Yesterday I noticed open water with duck tracks in the snow covered ice surrounding the openings. After finishing the run, I got my camera snuck up through the woods to where I saw the tracks. The only one there was this female mallard who was busily feeding.

This time of day is tough because from the direction I had to shoot it was backlit. She started moving along the ice to a little channel of open water.

IMAGE: http://jack-dorsey.smugmug.com/Nature/Thaw-at-Campton-Pond/i-JgfKbMs/0/L/IMG_1720-L.jpg

Finally getting to a place where there was more sun on her face.

IMAGE: http://jack-dorsey.smugmug.com/Nature/Thaw-at-Campton-Pond/i-4MLKbsC/0/L/IMG_1733-L.jpg

When I got home and started post processing, my friend TC arrived. My work flow goes something like this. Move TC from the front of the monitor, start up, lightroom, get TCs paw off the duck showing on the screen, select a preset, move TC so you can see what it looks like ...............

This is That Cat (TC)!

He is helping me with this post right now!
