This was shot with the 6D and 70-300L at 300mm f5.6, 1/320s, ISO 16000. I think the 6D and this lens were made for each other. I love the combo.

Now mind you, for airplane spotting you'll need a fair amount of light with this lens at full zoom and f5.6. But it's a very sharp lens even at 300mm and the IS is awesome.

Been awhile since I've posted, here's a few from a recent sledding party.

This is indeed a good example with high ISO with the 6D, I could forget about such a result on my previous camera the 50D. This looks really great and soooo sharp!
Although it's an F4-F5.6 lens, I should be able to manage using this for plane spotting. I think I will rent this lens and try it out.

Hello, I hope some owners of this lens can help me......still have not decided. I have looked at alot of images from the 70-300L in this thread and I do like what I see.

Two weeks ago I purchased a 6D (and sold my 50D + EFS 10-22mm) and am left with a 24-105L on the 6D.
I had made my mind up to get a Sigma 70-200mm APO OS last weekend, but held off. The last time I held a 200mm in my hands was in the film era! And even then I remember the reach was just a bit too short some times.

The main reason to get the Sigma is because it's a 2.8 lens. But now I am wondering if I can make do with the f/4 from the 7-300L because the high ISO performance of the 6D is just ridiculously good(compared to what I am used to with the 50D). Another advantage would be the extra 100mm reach from the 70-300L.

I want to use this lens mostly for landscapes, "airplane spotting" and nature/animals.

Is anyone maybe using this lens on a 6D?
Any advice is much appreciated!

For those uses, which are all outdoors during the day, the 70-300L would be a great match.

I forgot that one of my first uses of this lens was at the local airshow. It does perform well for that in daylight. This shot was from my 7D, not the 6D.

Awesome birds, cats, dogs, people and planes on the previous page!

Pinnacle, I'm especially fond of Great Blue Herons, let alone 3 in one frame!

Tommy, nice shot of the Hawk!

Dooku, as mentioned above, the activities you mentioned occur primarily in the daylight hours... which is when this lens shines. If you need reach, the only options I would suggest are the 70-300L or 100-400L. Each has its pluses/minuses, but both are very nice lenses.

Lens arrived middle of the week - since when the weather has been rotten and I have had a filthy cold.

So my poor first offering is a humble seagull - hoping to get out and do something a little more adventurous next week.

Emma, glad you got your lens, congrats and nice gull photo. If you plan to take pics of them or other birds in flight, I'd suggest lowering the aperture to f/5.6-7.1 and raising the iso if necessary so the shutter speed is higher than 1/250. I personally like at least 1/800 or 1/1000 for in flight shots. For perched shots like your gull above, your settings are fine, although f/11 may be a little overkill for a small bird. This lens performs extremely well in the f/5.6-7.1 range, not much stopping down necessary for great results!

p.s. Gulls are great practice for in flight shots, it's how I cut my teeth when I was new to bird photography.

You're welcome. Birds and sports are pretty similar in that Shutter Speed is KING! Just like every other kind of photography, once you find what works well for you, it becomes 2nd nature. :)

Thank you all for responding and the examples! I guess I don't need more convincing :-) This is just the most versatile lens with this reach and I do not find it that big or heavy compared to a f/2.8.
I only really need a fast lens for wide angel any way for indoor work.

This. The lens is crazy sharp wide open, in fact I almost always shoot with it wide open now.
