Thanks Mark.

But check that link I posted. This guy got otters running at him and had 8 out of 10 (I think). Otters are FAST....

Problem for us is that a front-on does not happen all the time so we can determine if it is just not possible or something else (unless you have a dog). :)

Actually the first is them just leaving the starting line. The other two are of them approaching the starting line! These dogs LOVE to race, that is what they live for and they can't wait to get going. This was the World Championship for the so called short sprint races, which are about 25 miles. As compared to the Iditarod which is a marathon of epic proportions. LOL

bobo, I checked that link just now. Impressive test of that camera/lens combo, if only I had the mega-$$$$, lol. I didn't notice him mentioning which lens he was using, but I'm betting it costs about 3x-4x what our 70-300L's cost, or more, and likely focuses faster and more accurately. When the weather warms up a bit, I will test out my 6D/70-300L with my Pug running straight at me. Of course, I'm expecting far worse results than Mr. Rouse got with his owl/otter tests, but it will be fun to do anyways. I think Christina has posted some dogs running somewhat directly at her in the past with good results... not sure of her hit rate, but I'm betting the 5D3 is much better at this type of shooting than the 6D.

Thanks Mark.

"Somewhat" head-on is usually fine, it is the full head-on that are usually not. :)

I'm not sure my dog will behave that well. Maybe I'll have my wife hold some lunch meat over my head, haha! :D

I do quite a bit of "coming at you" shots with sledding and baseball and I use AI Servo and with this lens it just seems to nail it 90% of the time or more.
I did just pick up a used Canon non-IS 70-200 f/2.8 L and shot sledding action yesterday and I didn't get as many keepers as I usually do with the 70-300L.

I would agree that my "straight/nearly straight at you" bursts are about 90% accurate. I get maybe 3-4 shots out of an entire burst will be completely out of focus, but again this is with any lens. So its either a limitation of my skill at the moment, or I just have not found the right combination of AF settings with my camera.

I've had excellent results - generally 100% with head-on running dogs and flying birds with the 60D & 15-85 and the 85 f/1.8 and the 70-300L. I just have to remember to close up the aperture a little when shooting with my 85 f/1.8 if I want the best keeper rate.

And great captures everyone ;-)a

Thanks JV, Will, Christina. Could be a technique thingy as Christina mentioned earlier. Need to work on that a bit more.

Those are fantastic goose shots, I go back and forth between RAW and JPEG and without fail end up going back to JPEG. I just find the workflow to be smoother, easier and quicker in JPEG and I can live with the short comings of editing JPEG vs RAW.
Maybe I'm lazy!! :oops::lol:
