I tried a 70-200f4 IS, the 70-200f2.8 IS ll and the 100-400L for a few days with each they all had there plus points but also down sides. The 70-300L however ticked every box for me.

Nice photo and it does look like a nice lens, a tele I may actually carry. Its certainly next on my list.

sums up my reason for having it, that plus the fact that as has been shown so well recently, it lets you switch from distance shooting to near macro work without a lens swap

It works well for portraits too, here's a grab shot of one of my granddaughters
