i sold this lens
its great and better than the non L in image quality
the IS is new ,fast focus and the size is good for the bag
but it makes the bag heavy :)
i like the 70-200 f/4 the non IS and with IS more than this lens

It hardly makes the bag heavy - I mean compared to a kit lens, sure, but compared to lenses like the 100-400 or the 70-200 2.8's, its a feather in a bag (and handheld as well).

Actually I just picked up a Lowepro Flipside 400AW so I could have a backpack that could fit EVERYTHING camera-related I owned - not only if I decide to travel and want to bring it all with me, but also a place to store it thats better than scattered across different bags and my desk ( ) - the 70-300L is great in this bag, it takes up little space (far less than a 70-200 would) which let me have room for not only the rest of my lenses (and two bodies) but my flash and lens hoods as well (they wont fit on the lenses in the bag). Everything all fits "just" but it fits :) If the 85L hood wasn't as big as the lens itself is, I would have another spot open. Im going to see if I can come up with something better to store the obnoxiously large lens hoods. Only lens hood that is actually ON the lens in the bag is the 70-300L's

For someone who is NOT a pro, and interested in this lens for nature photos, travel etc., would the added cost of this lens be worth it compared to the much cheaper non-L version? I can be picky about IQ, and weather sealing is attractive, so that's why I am looking at it.

Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks.

the non-L was pretty good at f/8, mine was better at f/9... but for the better AF speed and precision and contrast and IS and acuity and build... I think you've read the consensus :D

I was scared shooting wide-open for the first year I had it... now I do 90% of the time unless I need the DOF

Whilst I've never had the non L I do have the Tamron version, which some say is better. Immaculens pretty sums up my experience too...the Tamron wasn't at all bad but I found it needed to be used nearer to F8 at the long end whereas the L's pretty fine wide open.

The contrast's better as is the AF but for me the main benefit is wide open performance.

Been awhile since I've posted anything here.
I took this through a less than crystal clear window and cropped very heavily. Bumped the saturation a smidge and a slight bump in contrast, that's it.
This lens is nothing short of fantastic!

90 gigapixel Chicago pano. This is 17 landscape images shot at 300mm. The full file is 40+ MB, so it'll take a bit to load.

Sound advice on the 55-250 Omer, and nice comparison pic.

Great shot JV, what sort of bird is it?
