Anyone own or have owned the 300 f4l? I am curious to see how you would compare the two lenses. The intended use is wildlife.

bobobird Cream of the Crop 5,138 posts Likes: 24 Joined Oct 2010 More info | Daniel - the "preferred" lens for wildlife (according to some "experts") is either the 400/5.6 or the 300/2.8. For hand-holding, the 400 is generally preferred. Though the 400 lacks IS it is not said to be an impediment. Some people even attach a rifle-like brace to help with panning etc.

oldcanon Senior Member 406 posts Likes: 19 Joined Sep 2010 Location: Christchurch, UK More info | Daniel, I used to use the 300 F4LIS + 70-200 F4 LIS as my tools of choice for wildlife work and replaced both with the 70-300 LIS. I find the 70-300 LIS is faster to focus than the 300 F4 and possibly more accurate more often. Resolution and detail is equivalent, except at MFD when the 300 has a slight advantage.

I remember being pretty happy with it intially and the pics at that time were decently sharp. Do not understand why there is now a noticeable difference.
