I've not posted here for a bit as I'm in the last few days of prep for an annual exhibition & sale (which pays for my new gear next year if I get things right! :) )

As I needed a short break I have just had a quick scan through the thread and it was both enjoyable (some great shots) and fun to reflect on the many negative comments that this lens received when it first came out.

As an early purchaser in the UK I got a fair bit of stick from the "critics" but as time has passed more and more of us have found just how good this tool can be at meeting our various needs.

Well done everyone and thanks for the company! :D

^^

Clearly by the looks of your picture they got the zoom and focus rings in the wrong place on the non L version. :)

^^^
I think the location of the zoom ring will take a bit of getting used to - but it does seems to help balance the weight when holding the zoom

Those were taken from a swimming canoe in costa rica.
The IS is amazing. So is sharpness and autofocus. I love this lens.

I traded my 70-200 f4L last Saturday for this Lens. Haven't had the time to get outside & take pictures as it has been raining almost no stop since Monday. This is the 1st day we awoke w/o the sound of rain so I'm hoping to venture out this weekend & get some shots to share.

Had a quick walk with the 70-300L to try it out - love the result (note the snail shell on the thorn)

Experimenting with close focusing distance.
The frog and the fly were cropped around 30%

near MFD @ 300mm

near MFD @ 70mm or so

A testament to the IS system. Taken near MFD at 300mm. 1/20s

It really is. I was one of those who used to doubt the need for it, but I think it's a great option now.

Nice closeups Daniel and Omer.

Slap on an extension tube and you are almost into macro territory.

Extension Tube Talk:

(Hey gang - great contributions)

[Update: I've now read up on ext tubes and wish only your own experience feedback now - thank-you]

I won't have the $ for a macro lens any time soon and I love this L lens which is on most of the time - but can someone enlighten me more about extension tubes on this or other lenses?

An extension tube allows you to photograph closer than what your len's MFD is? No image quality issues?

other benefits?

I saw that a Canon one was approx. $200 - are there different specs to look for - or 3rd party brands that do the job?

I like the idea of popping on an ext. tube if I happen along some good subjects.

Thanks!
