Extension Tube Talk:

(Hey gang - great contributions)

I won't have the $ for a macro lens any time soon and I love this L lens which is on most of the time - but can someone enlighten me more about extension tubes on this or other lenses?

An extension tube allows you to photograph closer than what your len's MFD is? No image quality issues?

other benefits?

I saw that a Canon one was approx. $200 - are there different specs to look for - or 3rd party brands that do the job?

I like the idea of popping on an ext. tube if I happen along some good subjects.

Thanks!

one simply rule for extension tubes: everyones air is the same

extension tube has no glass, all it does is moves the lens farther away from sensor.

A great lens
here is another sample from close distance

is it just me or is that way to saturated.

Yes you are probably right (although the picture OOC does look very similar) so here it is overly de-saturated
anyways the lens is great (the one who does the PP may not be)

Yes it will allow you to get closer than MFD -and yes it is only AIR (no glass) - biggest benefit is cost - 3rd party are as good but do not buy the very low cost (~$20) - i would not trust the mounting element but you can find reasonable ones for around $100
there are multiple threads here on PONT on tubes/Macro - very helpful

thanks for the info folks - I've done further reading now and only need any personal feedback you have using them (such as the 25mm) with your 70-300mm or 50mm 1.8

Thanks!

One thing to mention - with tubes you will not get infinity focus.

This was under harsh backlight. I was surprised that I could get this much detail out of the bird. This lens handles situations like this very well.

Thanks. I think I am going to start a thread in the nature photo section about kayak photography. Doesn't seem to be real popular hear, but there are several very talented wildlife photographers on fredmiranda that use kayaks with great results. It's my favorite method so far.

Hey everyone, first post

Just picked up this lens a couple of days ago after pining for a telephoto option for a couple of years. Have so much more reach to work with now and it feels awesome.

Took it out for its first spin earlier today, just to get acquainted, and yup, it is an awesome lens. Kick ass IS and sharpness.

Anyway, here are a couple shots, both handheld, colours processed a little in Lightroom 3 plus a small but not too significant boost in clarity.

This lens seems to have really good closeup capabilities.

Great shots, bobobird! Did you use extension tubes?
