Thanks sth, on the dragon no, yes the 20mm for the grasshopper. He was at most 1 inch long and about .5" tall, but our lens nailed it.

MFD of the lens is just under 4 feet. So yes for closeup it can be pretty good. Not true macro though.

Thanks oldcanon, Will and Sebastien.

Seb - the 100 will let you catch much greater detail. But then I have not tried stacking all 3 tubes to see what ours gets.

And I have seen people using the full stack of tubes on a 100 so...

I rarely need 1:1 macro, so the 100 is staying at home most of the time. I keep it for the very few times I need to get closer and because it sells really cheap since the 100L is out.

I don't seem to find any date code on this lens, did Canon ditch the date code markings?

Canon did away with the date codes recently. They still use serial numbers, but I don't think that there are date codes on the new lenses. I really don't understand why, because I always felt like this was an easy way to see how old a lens was when buying used. Maybe they are just trying to get us to stop buying used equipment ;)

So it is a slow lens - but it does focus well at low light
my wife brought flowers for the weekend - so i tried to shoot at night - no special lighting hand held ISO 6400 Tv: 1/100 (FL 104)
some NR applied with photo-shop (and yes there is a bit of grain if you view at 100%)

As long as you point to something with a bit of contrast it will focus very fast.

Thanks omer.

Yes the usual - mostly defaults in ACR, some levels adjustments, a bit of touching up, NR, sharpening and crop.

He was only about an inch long.
