Hey Jim,
How do you like the 70d performance with 300mm + 2x TC? How's the AF and high iso performance? Im thinking to buy one for my backup.

I got my first DSLR less than 3 years ago, so take that into account. That said, I find that the 70D is better in every way than either the 60D or the 7D that I previously owned. The 70D's AF performance with the 300 and the 2x TC has been excellent both in single shot and AI Servo mode. However, I haven't had the pleasure of using a 5D3 or a 1Dx. People coming to the 70D from one of those bodies might be significantly less satisfied than I am. I would love to hear if that's the case. I may consider a full-frame body in 2014.

High ISO (3200 or higher) is much better with the 70D than previous crop sensor bodies. However, I find that I don't want to crop those photos very much because the digital noise does start to be a factor. If I don't crop, I'm happy with the high ISO results. See below for an example.

Regards, Jim

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

Here's a 50% crop of an eagle taken at ISO 2000.

Thanks Jim! I know that I'm not expecting it's high iso performance to match 5D3 or 1DX. As long as the IQ is acceptable up to iso 6400, I'll be totally fine with it. For what I shoot and where I live (BC), these 2 things (AF & high iso) are the most important for me.

Thanks :) I managed two shots before she moved out of the light, here's the other one. Both of these are 600mm (with the 2x TC III) handheld:

This young eagle is leaving its perch to eat a fish that it just spotted. It wasn't a challenge for the eagle. The fish it chose was dead and laying on the bank of the river.

70D, 300 II, TC2 III. Not cropped.

^I love the detail (especially the tack-sharp eye)! How close were you and how much of a crop was needed?

Thanks, Jim.

That's Rob Harrison, an air show performer from the Southern California area.
At age 72, he's still going strong.
