Of course with proper light you can take nice shots with that zoom as well :)
but we can't compare a plastic 400g lens with 2 kg magnesium alloy glass.
the 300 is bigger coz more glass is needed for catching more light.
shooting at 2.8 u can use 4 times faster shutter time.
AF is far better, and is weather sealed..

Well, I'm now a proud owner of one of these excellent lenses. Managed to take it out to shoot some cricket the day I got it, absolutely insane images coming out of it already with my 1D Mark II.

Juvenile Sparrow Hawk I beleive

Took a wander along Davy Downs this morning up as far as the M25 / A13 interchange, not expecting much to be honest when we came across this bird of prey trying to catch the blue tits that were hopping around it - almost teasing it.

Mark - the woodpecker shot is superb, I keep trying but as yet have had no luck getting a shot worth showing, most are too far away or too skittish, will keep trying though

Thanks David. As with all bird shots, luck plays a part. Woodpeckers eluded me when I first tried to photograph them, now I seem to see them quite regularly. Keep trying, you'll get the results.
