Really nice cormorant fella.

Nipped up to Lee Valley this morning, cold n grey so wasn't expecting much - found a quite spot away from the dog walkers and just sat for 5 minutes, caught a slight movement out of the corner of my eye, lifted camera and:

Wasn't overly enamored with the shot so 'froze' and waited - sure enough a few minutes later I was rewarded with:

And that was my lot - he / she was off into the undergrowth.

QUOTED IMAGE

Very nice!
I just sold my 500L to get this lens together with the 1.4x and 2x III TC's. It's currently out of stock...I hope it will be here soon :)

Lars, before you buy the 300 f2.8 IS II, I think you should consider the new 400 DO II.
According to LensRentals, the 400 DO II seems to provide slightly better IQ than the 300/1.4x combo.

http://www.lensrentals.com …on-400m-do-ii-comparisons (external link)

The lenses are about the same price, and the 400 DO II weighs 1Lb less than the 300 and 1.4x together.
Using the 1.4x gives 560mm. I read a user report that said the 400/1.4x combo AF is very good.

Anyway, just an idea.

Thanks for the tip :)
But I got a call today from the store saying they got it in stock, so I bought it a few hors ago :)
I know about the 400 DO II, but I got a really good deal on the 300, so the 400 would be about USD1800,- more money, and I plan to use the 300 with my 5D3 for portraits and sports as well. I think it will be great for these uses.

That's simply awesome. How did you do the lighting?

Thanks. The bird already had a bit of light on it. I enhanced this by a gradual reduction in BG brightness in PS by about 25% coupled with an increase in brightness on the bird of about 10%. A radial gradient to subtly reduce the edge brightness (centred on the bird) finished it off.

Outstanding work Mark, the PP really works well and makes it 'pop'.
