Hey Mark,
Really not a fan of B&W but the cat shot is one of the exceptions - I really like the way the shot has been taken (height and position)

.DAVID.

Thanks David.

B&W is often preferable over colour for me. Depends on the image of course but some do suit the conversion IMHO:

Most of the time the AF with the 1Dx + 300mm + 2xTC is bang on target. In the shot below however it wasn't. So I got a nice shot of this tanker rounding the curve on the road outside RSPB Saltholme (N E England), instead of the two ducks in flight which you might just make out in the foreground. This was with my 300mm + 2xTC so 600mm and this is a 50% crop of that. So no, it wasn't what I was aiming at, but I'll forgive the camera on this occasion as the subjects were tiny in the frame hence the somewhat larger moving object behind them took the lock. If anyone reading is considering the 300mm f/2.8 lens, the detail recorded here (and especially in the large version if you click through to my Flickr page) may be of interest to you:

Must say, reading this thread was always going to be dangerous, and on Friday I picked up my copy of this optical masterpiece.

I had that chance to check it out over the weekend, all handheld.

Wide open completely destroying any background detail - check

The last 300mm 2.8 I had was an AF-S Nikkor in the early 2000's (back in the days of film), and whilst I liked that lens I have to say this one is in a completely different league.

PS I have to thank David Stallard and his earlier post in this thread for the idea of the check list.

A coupla bodies and a few lenses

Aww shucks - thanks!

Good to see you have taken the plunge - be prepared to sit in front of the screen for hours trying to pick a favorite to print - I have taken to scrolling with my eyes closed and selecting the one it stops on.

few from me:
Weatherman said no rain for the day so we went for it - 3 1/2 hours each way, few dry but grey hours followed by a lot of wet hours - took the whole drive home to warm up and stop shivering lol.

1DX, 300mm 2.8 mkII hand held as usual (HUGE thanks to the guy that invented IS)

#1 1/500, f/3.2, iso 160 a little moist, thankfully the kit is weather proof

#5 1/640, f3.2, iso 100 slight advantage - WD40 disperses water doesn't it?

No ripping apart required David...oh and of course it was wet... Isn't that standard bank holiday weekend weather?... At least that is what I seem to recall when growing up and living there.

Yep def standard B/H weather lol.

Well that's me done here in a contributors capacity I'm afraid guys, my 300 went on a trade in yesterday - now the proud and slightly scared owner of the 200-400 with built in 1.4 extender.

Hopefully it's not too big a mistake. . .

Brutal, harsh, and hard light the last time I used it, but this was the correct length for the 1st air show that I have ever attended.
I would have thought 400mm was correct, but the 300mm was great.

It was a hot day.
