This lens is such a PITA to carry around with my other lenses (I injured my shoulder so it's really a drag) BUT

It is oh, so wonderful. I love this lens. I took it to the beach yesterday morning (on the Gulf Coast of Florida) and hauled it over lagoons, everywhere with a monopod (which I hardly used).

It always comes through. For the last couple of years I have been using it with my R5. All taken with the 2X Teleconverter.

I can see why you love it. I love the 400/2.8II that my good friend lent me. The images are superb. But the weight is, well, I can only handhold it in shooting position for about 30 seconds at a time. I can't imagine what the version 1 must have been like as it was a lot heavier.

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

And it's been a few months since I used it last (probably for those pics above in November). And my shoulder is still hurting.

I dragged the lens out a couple of days ago with a tripod to see some nesting birds locally.

It didn't disappoint. And yes, it was ISO 4000. The R6II can take it!!

It is sweet with or without teleconverters. And seems to work pretty well on the R series. But they apparently have discontinued it and I have heard they are not going to do an RF version.

Ya I know it's discontinued. Some day, when I accumulate enough funds, I'll find me a good used one. ;-)a

The delightful Eastern Yellow Robin is a bold and inquisitive inhabitant of the rainforest and will often flutter down as you pass by.:-)

I used my EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens at a recent 'Highland Games' in Massachusetts.
I used this lens via an adapter on an EOS R3.

Below are a couple of images that I like where this lens was used, and there are others in an associated album on Flickr.

At the George Street Bike Challenge for Major Taylor - 2023, in Worcester, Massachusetts.

George Street is reported to have an average 18-percent grade.

Information about this race and its history can be found at:

https://www.majortaylorassociation.org/events/georgestreet23.shtml (external link)

Lastly, I added some slight vignetting in 'post' on most of the images from this event. If you detect it, it is NOT from the lens.
