Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM

Pictures are obscenely beautiful.

Looking forward to getting mines.

Looks like the 1.4x iii exhibits little to no iQ hit

Couple of questions for the owners here, I purchased one on Friday but suffering massively as I may have to wait another 1-2 weeks for it. I am literally dreaming of using it every night and looking at sample images here and Flickr to get by!

- Seems like the IQ hit with the TC is fairly minimal unless you pixel peep. Do you find it holds a good IQ even with a 2x III handheld?
- How is the AF impacted with the III TCs? I hear it is not significant, even on a 7d/5dmkiii
- Does the front end mark a lot from the hood, like the older versions?
- Do you find you can handheld for a sustained amount of time?

This wait is horrid

This is used during the Olympics. If it's good enough for Reuters it should be good enough for Sports Illustrated.

I don't doubt it, I was at the Olympics at a lot of events and ogled at the Canon equipment the guys had

Just wanted to know on some of the finer points.

Buy a replacement foot if you're planning to use it on a Arca Swiss-compatible head and a lenscoat to avoid banging it up.

A very nice set. Impressive IQ with the 2xTC fitted. Any cropping done to these? I'm interested as the 400mm f/2.8 is top of my lens list for later this year (hopefully)

The king parrot had only minor cropping done (probably about 1/4 cropped out by area), but the robins had a fair bit (see attached for an example). I am impressed by the IQ. I did notice a minor hit with the autofocus, but this was in pretty low light and I was focusing through the full range rather than limiting it.

I purchased the lens due to it's flexibility. I am just starting to get into birds, but I have many other uses for this sort of lens, including kids sports, aviation, motorsport, wildlife in general, and astrophotography. It is an investment, but there is also a great pleasure you get from owning and using such a lens.

but I have to say the ISO show up a bit, maybe the 1/1250 could have been reduced a bit, but I am being picky here
