Your right that the noise does show through a little (seems a little cleaner in lightroom), though it is a reasonable crop of the original image (see attached) which makes it harder to hide the noise

The image was taken in overcast conditions in a forest and shooting in Av with light changing where ever you point the lens I was playing it safe at 3200. Maybe I should give the auto ISO a go as I have heard good things about it's operation on the 5D3.

about auto-iso, yes you should give it a go for sure, it is a great tool
I use it all the time on my 1D4
I use at the same time the two custom function to set min/max ISO and min/max speed, I put both in MyMenu for quick access
it is not as quick as it could be but it is super easy to set up and micor manages super well my ISO

I normally put max 1600iso and mini 1/125 with the 85mm, or 1/500 with the 200/2 and a moving subject etc ...

I don't know what is exactly available on the 5D3, but I strongly recommend you try auto iso, if you set the right limits and change them when it is needed it will have a great impact on your ISO, saving you one speed most of the time simply because it will do the micro management for you

for your photo I would have set 1/500 mini and would have got ISO 1250 maybe ...

have fun anyway, subject and composing and background and having fun is more important than settings

Congrats Jon - looking forward to you posting some outcomes.

I went the Gitzo / Wimberley Gimbal route for support, and a manfrotto monopod.

I did try the Wimberley on a manfrotto 055XProB originally, but it was right at the limit (could not extend the lower leg section and be satisfied it was well supported) and it wasn't long before I was dipping into the pockets for the Gitzo (GT3542XLS). Impressed with the Gitzo so far.

Manfrotto's great for less heavy ang shorter gear but for heavy and longer gear go with Gitzo.
