Any thoughts on these two variants?

one is jpeg from RAW via C1,
the other is RAW to 16 bit Tiff (for printing then editing) in PSCS, and then a jpeg copy.

Jake - ok my iPad that second shot is WAY more detailed and crisp. What comments are you looking for?

The first image is the better shot, BUT, it needs selective sharpening around the eyes, beak and feet. Maybe a little on the in focus section of the ground, but not much. Remember, birds feathers should look soft, especially this tiny chick, they should be so soft you could hardly feel them if you touched them. The second image is way over sharpened. Look at the halo you've created around the beak as an example. Whatever technique you use for sharpening, a little goes a long way :-)

+1 but if Jake's used different raw converters these are likely to have different inherent sharpening in the algorithm.

Thanks guys,
Both came out of capture one, same processing.
The first one is the jpeg straight from C1, all processing in C1. Very mild output sharpening, largely due to very mild noise reduction, as i don't want to reduce detail.
NR and sharpening in RAW converters still not my thing as I like to seperate them in PS so i am not sharpening noise, or blurring detail.

the second image was the tiff, then opened in Photoshop and more done to it. Noise reduction and Sharpening can be done much better.
Clearly, a little heavy on the sharpening, but I'll need to look back and see if the "oversharpening" occurred to the 16 bit tiff, or just to the reduced size jpeg "save as" .

thanks guys.

One thing I have yet to be able to accomplish is a reduced size jpeg straight out of a RAW converter that i feel is "done" But man it would save a lot of time if I could.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

Haha... thanks mate! I think it is the Wobblies that need all the luck! Hopefully they will make a match of it - one-sided Trans-Tasman matches aren't the natural order of things.
