I hate to look at those results because they are killing me.

I am thinking about a cheap way or alternative to this lens to get same or similar focal length, but i am not sure if i will get same quality anyway, but i can just try and see, hopefully it can work.

Can anyone here show me the setup how you place/mount that lens with camera to use for photography? I mean which head or lens mounting ring or collar or whatever you use, i have strong tripod and ballhead from the past that can handle, but i think those kind of lenses need different handle to be used than ballheads.

I use a full Wimberley on Gitzo Systematic 5

Perfect set up for all-weather and wind conditions. You can put the Wimberley on a lighter less sturdy tripod depending on the conditions. I also shoot on a monopod sometimes as well. I have tons of pictures with this lens in my gallery.

Here is my setup.

Gitzo fluid gimbal head with Robus 5570 tripod. With the lens I use the Wimberly replacement lens foot to reduce the height of the mounted lens. This also allows for easier hand holding as the center of mass is closer to my support hand.

If I am using the 1.4x or 2x extender I’m most often mounted to the tripod or supporting the lens on the ground. I rarely hand hold at these focal lengths. At 600mm however I am satisfied with handholding this lens, but it is not light and I don’t think most people would enjoy shooting it that way.

Wimberley Gimbal was the first came to my mind, i was planning to buy it in the past like in 2008 or 2009, but things happened and i couldn't buy big lenses to get Wimberley anyway.

Thank you

Cool and nice setup, great how to make the lens almost like stealth in the surrounding, less attention for wildlife or birds.

Sounds only that Wimberley part i need if i will use big lenses like that, i have old Gizo tripods series 3 and 5, so they will do the job just fine.

Thank you.

The gimbal head definitely makes a difference in handling. Though a large or extra large ball head will work as well but you can’t take your hands off while it is unlocked. I have used the 600mm on my arca swiss Z1 ball head and it holds the weight fine at any angle, though the location where you lock it down may not be centered over the tripod’s balance point, which is one of the main purposes of a gimbal system.

Another middle ground is a wimberly sidekick style adapter for a ball head. This would work on the 500mm but the center of gravity would be off on the 600mm making it less practical. If you decide to go for the 600mm you’ll definitely not want to compromise; get a full gimbal.

A side note for the lens cover. For my uses, this is primarily for protection and to make it less noticeable to people when I’m in a hide. My primary focus for birds is minimizing movement, which seems to be a much bigger predator trigger than color. There are exceptions of course, like Caspian Terns hunting you down like a missile from a half mile down the beach if you’re not completely concealed. :-)

I use the Really Right stuff TVC-33S carbon fiber tripod (external link) with the Jobu Design Pro2 Gimbal head (external link) and a low profile Arca Swiss replacement foot. The support system can get pricey, but worth it.

Beautiful image!

It is still or remained expensive since years, that is why i couldn't buy it back then, and i don't think i will buy it anytime later if i don't have any big lenses such as 600mm.

I just got a copy of this lens the other day. I was saving for this lens thinking to buy it in the Spring but I found a seller locally and could not pass up the offered price. What an amazing lens this is.

PS
Thank you so much Weja and methodicAl for the feedback I really appreciate it.
