I just got a copy of this lens the other day. I was saving for this lens thinking to buy it in the Spring but I found a seller locally and could not pass up the offered price. What an amazing lens this is.

Congratulations... I hope you enjoy it for many years to come. :-)

Where did you get that lens coat. :).

I got it through this company (external link). It’s better made than the LensCoat I have for it as well. The pattern is called “moss”.

Pro Tip. At least that is what I will call it. I use bike handlebar tape to wrap my tripod legs. This provides comfort, grip and keeps your hands warm during those cold days. The RRS tripod did not come with the foam on the legs. I will update with a photo shortly.

This is just one example of handlebar tape. There are many versions and cheaper bar tape out there.

Thank you. Got out to try it yesterday really love it.

Question though. When you are on a tripod do you used IS mode 3? Or turn off the IS totally.

Thanks

My lens stays on IS 3. I don't like that weird movement if the viewfinder with the other IS modes.

The 600 II has tripod-sensing I.S., so in most situations you won't need to turn it off. When the threshold for vibration or movement is below that of the sensor's detection, it will shut off the I.S. by itself so you don't get the "ship-at-sea" view as the subject moves around the frame. If I'm doing a long exposure I will still turn IS off because wind might trigger it to kick on half way through the exposure.

Mode 1 I'll use for hand held stationary or slow moving subjects. It works well on a tripod, but fast accelerations in panning (bird taking off) will mess it up and cause the frame to jump around.

Mode 2 I use exclusively for hand held panning. But there are limitations to this, as it only provides 1 axis of stabilization. It really wants to maintain that axis direction.

Mode 3 This is what I typically leave the lens set to for 80% of the time on a tripod. I will also use this mode for hand held panning if the subject is not traveling on axis' picked up by mode 2, which is most birds in flight.

Thanks Al I noticed that too. Definitely will do the same on mode 3. Thanks again Al.

Thank you very for your input. I will try that next time I am out shooting. Mode 3 it is than on the tripod. Cool. Thank you for thorough explanation. Now I am excited for my next outing.
