Only the male Loon yodels, and the yodel is his territorial vocalization. Apparently each male yodel is distinct and can be used like an audible fingerprint. To yodel the Loon fully extends its neck and enlarges the throat in order to create a type of percussion chamber. It then presses and moves its tongue into the roof of the beak to help make the pitch changes during the yodel. It is thought that as the Loons reach full size their yodel pitch lowers as the throat volume increases. During one of the many hours Deb & I spent in a canoe with Loons this summer, we observed a new male fly into the area of the pair we were watching (presumably to fish) which caused the resident male to immediately head towards the 'intruder' and start yodeling. The visitor left as quickly as he came and headed off elsewhere to fish. Here is a shot of the yodeling male. Its amazing how loud the yodel is from 30'

I love that sound. It reminds me of the many trips we made to MN when I was young. I see loons now when they come down to the Gulf Coast in winter, but they lose their color and become silent. Beautiful capture!

I just listened to the loon yodel. Quite unique sound. Nice though. And a pretty shot!

Beautiful shot Scott......I sure didn't know that the males were the only ones that made that wonderful yodel, this is my "learn something new everyday" thing for today.

That's such an incredible shot. I moved to NW Ontario several years ago and I still can't help but smile when I hear the loons call from the lake nearby.
Never gets old!

I remember the first time I heard one on a lake in Maine. Great shot.

Such a lovely shot. Ever hear Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot's "Whispers of the North"? It's a song about this bird and includes his distinctive call.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments. I'm at the cottage for the weekend and only have my phone so it's next to impossible to respond with the multiple quotes.

Betty I didn't realize Gordon Lightfoot had fans way down in Florida :)
