Hi all, question from a daily lurker  I read the 18 page thread that's on page three now and am still confused by the response I got from the Ebay seller I previously purchase triggers from ( hkyongnuophotoequipment ) , who has both the new triggers and this new flash for sale. I had got the ones released prior to these new triggers and was pleased with them, but sold them as part of a small lighting setup.

A used 580 EXII is about 400.00, up here in Canada and I was excited because for the same amount, I could get 2X the 468 flashes and 2 sets of the newest triggers, which would give me a nice 3 small flash set-up ( I have a older Sunpak 383 )

His response to my inquire, concerning compatibility with the 7D is below:
Hi friend,

Thank you for your letter.
?

If you don't use TTL function, and then you can use YN-465 and YN-468 with your Canon 7D camera.
But?if you use TTL function , and they are all?not compatible, please kindly note.?

In the 18 page thread, a couple of 7D users stated they are using the 468s with out problems, except the ISO doesn't show up on the flashes LCD, I think that was the only thing mentioned?? I find it strange a seller wouldn't know that the new flashes do in deed work in ETTL with the 7D!!!

So, now that the flashes have been out awhile and in the hands of 7D owners ( as well as other Canon shooters ), is my plan to get them and the triggers a good move??

Thanks for any advice

I think it works if you run the flash in "manual mode". But if you want the camera to control the flash you need to use the ttl function of the flash which is not supported by the model you asked about. It'll make the flash flash, but you have to set it. At least that's my understanding.

I've been looking at the same thing and trying to work it out. It seems to me that if you are not going to use the eTTL funtion, then getting a cheaper flash than the 580 is reasonable because you won't be able to take advantage of the functionality of the 580. May as well get a dumb flash and save the cash (maybe get one 580 for on camera use without the remote stuff).

At least that is my understanding.

Appreciated, funny the sellers wouldn't outline that it can be used!!

560 sounds good for a manual/slave unit, I have the rf 602s too, current limitation I feel is the lack of HSS; but it's best to run through a product and realize what you may want from it/something else. All a learning experience. :)

Just make sure you order your flashes one a time from HK.

Hi,

I did exactly the same as you - just read through all 14 pages and right near the end saw someone say it doesn't work on the 7D, then I found out about the YN-468 and though - woohoo - then found out that apparently doesn't work either :(

How did it work out - did it work with the 7D?

Also did the Multimode work (I can't grab the image so here is a link (external link) to a seller that shows it)

I was/am indenting to use it on camera or perhaps with a cord style extension cable if that makes any difference.

Cheers

I did buy one and am pretty pleased and if you stay with on camera or corded, you'll be good to go.

Off camera ( not corded ) is MANUAL territory only, so the next purchase for me will be the 560s x2, ( or 2 older matching Vivitars/Sunpack 383s ) and learn OCF. ( Off Camera FLash )

It's nice to have one flash that is ETTL, but what with Line of Sight issues and the high cost for ETTL OCF, if your going to learn OCF, these are a cheap way of getting new flashes and setting up a 3 or 4 light portable setup along with their pretty decent flash triggers.

I have not used the Multi function, don't really know when I would, you have to use it at a much reduced power level and while my 7D and the flash would do 8 FPS, I don't even know in what situation I would use this feature for the type of shooting I do. Will play with it one of these days. Guess if your close to the subject and the right lighting/action situation, it could be useful.

I contacted them about the new controller they have brought to market
( too pricey at 150.00 imho ) in the hope it would control the 468s for ratios and OC, but it doesn't ???? Weird. So I assume the only way a 468 can be controlled OC is with a Canon master flash or Canon control, as the manual says it can do OC ETTL, just doesn't tell you what equipment it will do it with!!!

I'd like to hear from someone who has a 550/580EX/EX II, as well as the 468, and whether or not they can control a 468 OC wirelessly.

Learning OCF is a daunting task ( at least for my aging brain ) but there is a ton of info here on the net.

Good luck, hope this answers your question, partially anyway and probably has created more :) Good luck in your learning curve

No, that was a great answer - I'm never likely to do professional/studio photography so it would for the most part be to help with macro/family shots so this for me is wonderful.

Thank you :)
