Other than buying the WFT-E5 Wireless File Transfer Grip. What else do I need to buy and set up. So that I can transfer images directly to the computer as I am shooting.

Nothing, assuming your computer has a wireless card.

Does it come with its own software to run on the PC (options for mac, linux, NAS boxes?) or just upload to a windows share or ftp location?

if it's like the wft-e2, you can do an ad hoc connection with the provided utility, or you can upload to an ftp server directly. You'll need your own ftp server as it's not provided by Canon ;-)a

Hello
Can anybody recommend a BT GPS unit for me? I tried the qstarz, but its compatible only on paper :(

And anyone know a program that check the specific folder for new files and open automatically if found?

I don't remember if mine came with anything other than a software manual...but the disk that came with your camera has everything you need (and was probably installed when you installed the EOS Utilities) But soft was pc/mac only.

When i get home, i can recommend a keychain gps i use that works great...was cheap too ($20 or so)! best of all it's small, easy to charge, and gets pretty good reception. Doubles as a GPS for my ipad as well.

as for program, on a mac or pc?

I am embarrassed to tell you that though I have one for my 7D but have so far failed to get it working. Set up is a bit of a nightmare though there is a thread here explaining how which I really ought to follow when I have the time.

I didn’t get it primarily to do what you want to do but to remote control LiveView via the laptop using the EOS utility. This already works fine with USB cable but the WTF is more versatile in terms of distance.

One thing you will need is another battery. The WFT is powered separately and there is no power connection between the WFT and the camera. One LP-E6 in the camera and one in the WFT-E5. The LP-E6 is not supplied with the WFT-E5. This means every time you exhaust the battery in the camera, you have to unscrew the WFT-E5.

I'm using PC (win xp 32bit).
And thanks for the tip for the GPS unit! I'll go ask the local Vodafone if they have it or not.

could setup autohotkey maybe to continually san a folder...otherwise i think you'd have to leave a program running in the background

In linux you can set up a cron job or script, etc.
OSX has folder actions that are exactly what this is for.
Windows has Shell Extensions that you can script yourself, maybe find one that somebody else has built or a freeware/shareware app or ten (external link) out there

that's what you can set autohotkey to do...to scan the folder every x amount of time, and if it finds something open x program

i also think lightroom can do this...
