God I was really looking forward to getting the 24mm-70mm f2.8 with latest generation IS and very disappointed it is not included in the latest batch of new lenses. That would definetly be the best walkaround lens as the latest generation Canon IS seems to give 3 or 4 stops ... now when you combine that with f2.8, then you really have an extremely flexible setup. I know the f2.8 is available without IS today, but at 70mm the IS can be very useful in low light where shutter speeds are below 1/30s. Does anyone know if the 24-70mm with IS is still a possibility? I seem to have read many articles on the net that this setup was coming.

Have you considered what the price will likely be if they do introduce 24-70 with IS? IS generally adds $500-600 to the cost of a lens, and the 24-70 is already $1350. You're probably looking at ~$2000 for a general-purpose zoom. I suppose it would be popular with photojournalists, but otherwise I'm not sure it would have a large market.

Canon announced a new update.

It was announced at 11:15 CST that Canon have decided to delay their release of an EF 24-70 II 2. IS due to Photokina restricting the amount of annoucements that could be made in order to counteract the masses of bloggers moaning about its price.

As a result, Chuck Norris was sent in to help crowd control.

Well, here's my take on it... I"m still expecting it... someone posted Nov 16th... that's oddly not out of the question.
Consider this:
Since the EOS 1D's debut, every 1Ds model has debuted in November, exactly 3 years after the prior 1Ds. That logic has the 1Ds4 debuting in Nov 2010
1Ds (v1) Nov 2001, 1Ds ii Nov 2004, 1Ds iii Nov 2007, 1Ds iV (??Nov 2010??)

2ndly, considering the avg 10 years between versions of lens, and
the Version 1 of th 24-70 (the 28-70) debuted Nov 1993, and
this Version 2 24-70L USM debuted Nov 2002
Can it be that 24-70L IS USM might arrive Nov 2010??
Of course, the above logic might suggest it would debut Nov 2011 to 2013, as well. :(

Add to that as an aside, the 35 1.4L USM debuted Dec 1998... Looks overdue on my time frame observations... and look at that just in time for November 2010?

I'm holding off specifically on the purchase of either until after the holidays. (Got burned on the purchase of the 70-200 2.8L IS USM. Bought it Dec 31, Jan 17... vII was announced.) Saving 'till then ;)

It's hard to get "burned" when buying the popular L zooms - you can usually sell it for a minimal loss if you want to upgrade.

However, for all our sakes, please buy a 24-70mm so the rest of us can get the Mark II. :)

If they release a 24-70mm 2.8L IS, it will have the latest generation IS that the 70-200mm 2.8L IS II does and if it toots the same IQ of it as well across the entire FL range...I'll be buying it with very little questions asked.

The 70-200mm 2.8L IS II is such a vast improvement on it's predecessor that it's ridiculous.

I've always been a prime enthusiast, but the new 70-200mm 2.8L changed my perspective almost entirely.

As long as people stop calling it the 24-70 IS L II i dont care!

It would just be a 24-70 IS L....not mk2. If they made a version without IS it would be a mk2

Thank god no one here has yet.

Valid point. However whether people are (or were) calling it a 'II' or not, I'd still be very inclined to follow any samples had from this lens.

My interest in the lens is not enveloped in what people refer to it as. If that was the case, I probably wouldn't shoot with my "obsolete" 1Ds II. Hahaha.
