I think the portrait is better but overall, the picture is very dull and boring. Composition is nice as it has a vanishing point but something is "missing."

I agree with Wondertwins. I think the B&W conversion is flat, but do think the composition is nice.

What, in your opinions, does it need? A object which draws the eye or would color make it better? Any help is greatly appreciated, thx.

Sorry for being blunt here, but the shot needs something interesting to look at. You're showing the viewer a run of the mill set of railroad tracks that can be any stretch of the 230,000 miles of track in the US. Same goes for the landscape. Nothing interesting going on there either.

On the good side technically the color shot is very good. Good exposure and focus. I do agree though that the B&Ws(especially the 2nd) are a bit flat.

Is that so? Still learning every day.

The picture:
I agree with above. Technically good photo but lacks in interest. If this was a figure skating competition, this photo would score very high in technical merit but not so when it comes to artistic expression. I take many photos without a distinct subject matter but there are instances where the composition begs for some datum of reference or a matter of interest.

If it's in focus, it's pornography, if it's out of focus, it's art.

Thanks crashthenet44 and Mu Eugene.

That's exactly what I need to help me to develop a more artistic approach to photography.

Anybody else?

I am an amateur photographer, shooting for only about a year and a half. I have posted a few here, and get many critiques on them. You always have to take the good with the bad. It's a learning process. What you see as art may not be someone else's idea of art. I have found that a lot. Lots of great people on here giving very good critique though. This is the only place I post!!!
