Ok so i can only post a small pic here... but anyway..
this is a portrait setting shot i took of my son stretching.. getting ready at practice for a scrimage...

anyway... i like the pic... i like the blurr in the background.. him pretty clear and the ball in front clearer....

so since most of my pics coming up will be soccer.... im trying to learn how to use my camera (settings based) but then the later which is post editing... now this was a .jpg to begin with.. im going to do raw during games... and need to know...

when you look at this pic what is the first thing you think of...
1. fuzzy, wrong settings, unclear??
2. can this be fixed via lightroom or photoshop?
3. what recommendations do you have on the edit?

approval given for you to change it ......

I like the framing but to be honest the whole picture looks to be soft or out of focus to me. maybe it is a bit of motion blur but I do not see any point that is sharp. You could try and increase sharpening a bit in lightroom but i would probably not keep this one.
the shutter speed indicate it should have been OK but maybe start with a higher shutter speed to stop motion blur.

settings were
f-stop F/8
Exposure 1/500
iso 500
focal 300mm

this was one i tried as im learning.. trying to figure out settings and how to use the camera.... i got the settings from the pic properties... and it says.. metering mode Pattern... so not sure as i thought i had it on portrait..... also 300mm in my hands... not on a pod at all...

Not much you can do with an image that's a bit too blurry.

If...you really wanted to try and make it more presentable for printing, etc...I would suggest taking an image of just the ball. Make sure it's tack sharp then replace the ball in the original image with the sharply focused ball using photoshop or your image editing software of choice.

This would suggest you planned the composition that way.

No offense but I'm gonna be nasty... as I usually am with commenting photos. It's waste of time doing any PS work in this photo. Photo is not sharp and that's it. No matter what you do with photo, it won't change photo being unsharp.
Now since I hate comments "this is great" or "this one suck", I rather give some advice what to change, that it won't suck next time. So my advice would be separated in two different ways how to do it. First you need to decide on what you want to focus. One option is your kid, other option is ball infront of him. Both options would work, while focusing on grass between ball and kid (like it's case now) doesn't work ;)
So go for focus on either of those two (ball or kid), open your aperture a bit more, so depth of field is smaller, and other thing (ball or kid) won't be so much in focus as it's at the moment. You will get much more interesting photo this way. If you go for focus on ball, try to get a bit lower, and next time a bit to left, so that orange training cone in background would get straight behind kid, and it would make background cleaner.
Next thing is cropping. This one is way to wide.Right side of photo is fine, but all other 3 sides are not. My way would be, and it would work for both previously stated options, to crop about 1cm bellow ball on bottom, just above kid's hand on top, and 1cm or maybe even a bit less on left side of kid. Bushes in background don't bring anything to photo, just as empty space on left (you can't really talk about negative space with this composition) doesn't.
So hopefully this few things will help at least a bit, even though my original comment was "just delete this photo" ;) And once again... no offense for that one :)

First issue... bump to the lowest F-stop possible. I use 2.8 for all sports it creates the brokah (back ground blur) so i think on your lens you can get down to 3.5-5-6 use that.

Keep the Exposure/shutter speed high. Soccer I use no less then 1/1600 sec. freezes all action!

If i took that photo I would go crap i messed up, then delete it.:(

You can always add blur, but you can never take it away!
