I'm going to go on record with my prediction as to one of the reasons why Canon is updating the superteles and tc's.

My feeling is that the next 1D model is going to be a FF camera. Canon was trying to think ahead to all the sports shooters that would need more reach once this move was made. The better IQ of the new lenses plus the new TC would allow shooters to lose no image quality when adding a tc to a lens such as the 400mm f/2.8 IS II. This would give them a similar field of view as they were used to when using the 1.3 crop, with better image quality than before. A win win (other than the loss of a stop...) but the better ISO handling of a FF camera would probably make up for that.

I would be extremely surprised if the 1Ds4 had the burst speed of the 1D4. If it does not have high burst speed, why not stick with the 1D4 for sports? I am guessing the new TCs are just to not hold back new and amazing sharp lenses like the 70-200 f2.8 IS II which is already out and all the lenses coming out. All the new lenses since the 70-200 f2.8 IS II have been amazing sharp. Even the 8-15L fisheye's MTF chart puts many primes to shame. Since all their new awesome L lenses will be super sharp, they just need TC's to keep up.

Remember that the super primes are also used by nature photographers so the need for better resolving power may just lie with the release of the 1DsMkIV...

If Canon is actually about to break the 30+ Mp barrier, it just stands to reason.

The upgrade cycle on glass is longer so with this tweak, they're good for the 1DsMIV and subsequent versions of the 5D and 1D as well.

My post was more in reference to the 1D mark V being a FF camera... You make a good point about the extra resolution the 1Ds Mark IV could bring to the table.
