So I got my camera about a week a half ago and been playing with it. I haven't received Understanding Exposures yet so I am just playing with all settings. Here is what I did this morning.

Are you asking for a critique on your exposure or your composition? Exposure wise, it's pretty good - highlights look like you used the on-camera flash - I'm not an expert on lighting though, could be wrong.

Composition wise, what are you trying to say with this image?

(I can hear my mother yelling in the background - "get a coaster for that thing!")

Not trying to say anything. New to doing this...so I posted a pic. My desk is coaster free. It's a man's desk. I did use the flash by the way. Is that a no no or something? I think it came out good.

On-camera flash is not a "no no" at all, but in general it gives you harsh highlights and bad shadows. Best if you can bounce the flash off of something (like a wall or ceiling) but on-camera won't allow that. Which would be why I hate using the thing myself :D

Composition wise - it's a shot of a drink. Technically it's fine. It's a great start! I suggest you spend a bit of time browsing the stickies on the whole artistic/composition side of things now that you're starting to mess around with the camera. Learning to think in a visually interesting manner is a fun and ongoing process (for me at least lol.) Good luck and happy experimenting!

Lighting lighting lighting. Lights and reflections are the huge deal when it comes to shooting glass. Control that environment.
