This is probably a silly question since I'm in the Canon forum but I'm looking at purchasing my first DSLR camera. I was set on the 350D until I got it in my hands and found it it was way too small. Then I looked at the Nikon D50/70S and they feel great. The 20D also feels good too. But there is quite a difference in cost between the 20D and D70S. I also like the screen better on the Nikon. Since I have to wear reading glasses, the bigger Nikon screen allows me to see the menus without glasses but with the Canon I have to put them on to read the menus. But I don't want this to be the factor in my buying decisison since the camera is what it's all about. Anybody got any comments please?

Um... buy Canon?

Seriously though, buy what you like. If you get a better camera (20D) but don't like using it, it won't be fun - although reading menus is not the main function of either camera. Finally - consider the system as a whole. Do you like the lenses, flashes, etc.. for either system more than the other?

Buy the Canon.

As jaypie77 said - look for things like accessories (lenses, flashes) as those are the big differences between the cameras. Personally I like canon accessories (having rented both a D70 and 300D)

CANON EOS 300D | Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS | CANON EF-S 18-55 F/3.5-5.6 | Some soft Hood | CANON EF 75-300 F/4.5-5.6 III USM | Canon ET-60 Hood | Canon EF 50 f/1.8 | Canon ES-62 Hood | CANON 430EX | MANFROTTO TRIPOD | Canon RC-1 Remote | A WHACK OF BP-511'S | SANDISK CF CARDS | LOWEPRO MINI-TREKKER AW |

Not to be biased, because most of us here are biased towards Canon. But go with the Canon 20D over the nikon.

In fact because you are asking which camera to buy, don't buy the 20D buy the Rebel XT (black). The XT and the 20D are virtually the same camera inside. The 20D does a few more advanced features that I bet the even most pros don't use often.

The XT will give you the best bang for your buck! Plus the cost difference between the XT and 20D will allow you to buy a lens and grip for about the same price.
