39" Eli Deep Octa

I've been thinking of adding a slightly smaller octabox. My 53" standard Rotalux octa works well on my 600RX. I haven't used a "deep" octa before. Can somebody help me understand the difference in how the depth of the box casts the light? Sample pics showing the difference would be truly appreciated.

Also, how does the increased profile affect it in breezy conditions. When I shoot outdoors, I try to limit myself to the shallowest modifiers I have, and the depth of the "deep" octas seem to provide a whole lot more surface to catch and ride the wind.

If the primary benefit is improved efficiency due to a more parabolic reflective surface within the box, then I may stick with the standard Rotalux octas, which I like.

The concept of the deep octa is that it focuses the light and gives you a more directional light with higher contrast. That's the reason why you see so many people talking about using it with only an inner diffuser or a deflector to create light very much like a beauty dish.

Knowing that you can have very directional high contrast light as well as soft, beautiful light with both diffusion panels installed makes it very versatile.

Everyone has a preference for how they like to use it and my two favorites are with only the inner diffusion panel and with both layers of diffusion.

Thanks Rob. That clarifies things for me tremendously. I had not considered use of a deep octa without the outer diffusion fabric, and I simply couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about the characteristics of the light after it had been diffused rather evenly through the outer diffusion panel. If it was just about efficiency, I could care less, as 5 of my strobes have 600 ws (or more) of output. But I can certainly see how removing the outer diffusion panel would make a significant difference in the character of the light.

... How stable is it outdoors without the front diffusion panel? Even though I heavily bag my stands, I get nervous when using any modifier that literally "catches" the slightest breeze. As you know, a 600RX is a pretty heavy light, and I wouldn't want it moving like a bobble-head doll .
