Went camping over the weekend at Alder Lake. Light from the fire was illuminating the tree. My focus was off. :(

Wow; I like how the star trails have non-concentric circles. I would have put $ that you used a 10-22 for this!

I love it. What are the dots from upper left diagonally down? Is it the beacon from an aircraft?

Really nice shot - what settings did you use for this?

I'd love to try it someday although I'm a long way off.

I used 17-40 on full frame which is almost the same as 10-22. :)

Not sure. I would expect a plane to have solid lines, they typically do. Not sure if satellites blink?

It was shot with 5D Mark II and 17-40 L @ 17mm, f/4, 30.0 sec, ISO 500

Thanks all three of you. I sat around the campfire while the shutter cable, camera and tripod did all the work. ;)

Great shot...way better than I've done so far. Could you give us the exposure again please...I think 30.0 sec was a bit short?

Ricardo, the exposure time is correct. The method I use is to take repeated exposures and combine them using the stacking program from startrails.de (external link)

I'm pretty sure it's 97. I was aiming for approximately 45 minutes so I went a little over.

Here's another one I did in the past for comparison sake.

Looks like a plane with the blinking lights.

Cool star trails!

Thanks for this info. I've always wanted to try star trails but got horrible grainy results from very long exposures. I'll try this method this weekend.

Awesome picture... I can't believe how clear it is.

Thanks Scott and you're welcome. :)

I've had situations in more urban areas where I'm able to take the photos at ISO 100 which really helps in keeping the noise down. The lower your ISO the better in my opinion. I don't like having to use noise reduction.

Best way to do this is to set your camera to continuous shooting mode (can't think of the correct term). Get your settings dialed in, and your focus. For this one I had a head lamp to see the focus ring, I went to infinity and then backed off slightly. Then I take a test shot to make sure the focus is accurate before going for it.. I usually go for 30 seconds on exposure time, then using a shutter release cable you lock the shutter and it will fire off a photo every 30 seconds for as long as you have card space and battery life ;)... When you have sufficient number of images, DL, edit and combine in Startrails.

PM me or post in here with questions and let me know how your first attempt turns out. :)
