I'm with you here. It would be nice to be able to shoot my 70-200 / 400 combo without having to bring my tripod along. I can live with a tripod and excellent image quality and autofocus for now though. I can be patient.

I think that a 400mm f5.6 IS L would be a game changer. Really sharp images, wide open with really close MFD and a 4 stop IS...But I think i'm being overly hopeful, I'm not convinced that this lens will be refreshed this year.

So what if tomorrow Canon announces a EF 400mm f/5.6L with 4-stops of IS, weather sealing, weight reduction of 28%, improved build quality, improved image quality, closer minimum focus distance & other improvements found in the 2010 Super Teles (external link) would this be worth $2,175-2,300?

I think could be interesting but i have no interest on stabilitazion on focal range above 200 mm and for $1500 so don't above $2000 many users could think about an upgrade if the new model could be f/4 with the same weight as have now the f/5.6.

I wouldn't upgrade from my current 400 5.6L. To a 500 f/4 however is a different matter...

Wish they'd release the update before shipping any 4K EF Cinema Lenses. Sony's 70-400 is $1800 so it is very possible that the Canon 400/5.6 IS would sell for at least that amount.
