Tonight I set up a remote camera under the judges stand for a different angle. I like the way these turned out. What are you thoughts.

My setup was a 1DMk2n with a 28/70 set about 50mm. Strobes were set to 2 stops above ambient lighting.

I set up the camera on a floor plate I got here (external link).

Love the angle of the captures!

(I visited the "Floor Plate" link. Would you please share with us the exact details of your set-up for these captures? Which PRO Tripod Head? Pocket Wizard? Etc.?)

This angle makes a very nice addition to the usual shots.

Your timing with those strobes is really, really, fine. Well done.

I use the Giottos MH-1300 head (external link). Only because I prefer the arca-swiss type mounts. This gives me the ability to shoot landscape or portrait with out changing the camera axis.

And the Pocket Wizards are the Plus II's.

I didn't take any images of my set-up (and I'm kicking myself for that now)
But the set-up was setting the rig right next to the pole and under the judges stand. I hooked up the PW with a OCF sync cord and was able to hang the PW so I would have a little better reception.

My focus point was approximately 10 feet. And the camera was pointed just inside the line. I used a 28/70 and set it to ~50mm. This was on a 1DMk2n so the crop on that is a 1.3x

Hope this helps.

I gotta try that angle this season!
Just so I understand, while shooting these, this was the only camera you were using?

No I was also hand holding another camera.
The shots shown here are from a remote camera I fired via Pocket Wizards.

Was this high school volleyball or college?
My experience with strobes hasn't been good when shooting volleyball. Even though I had them mounted at the top of the bleachers and pointed toward the ceiling, a coach still complained and I had to shut them down. The problem wasn't the strobes, it was the other team that was kicking their bootties!

I did get to use them for a state championship but it was for the private schools and the schools knew ahead of time that flash was going to be used. No complaints there.

This was Division 1 College volleyball. I have never had an issue with strobes for volleyball in colleges. I have heard that a lot of High Schools won't allow them. It is getting to be common place for colleges with contracted shoots.

Thanks Chef. I was watching a college game on tv and I could see the strobes going off so I was just curious.

These angles rock! Great change from the usual volleyball shots. I may definitely have to steal this idea....awesome.

Yep, it's $85 on their site. Looks like I might have to pick one up for soccer.

I'll be shooting soccer on Sunday and Monday with a camera set up behind the net, for sure.
