This thought has been bugging me for the past week or so. I absolutely love my 5DII, I love the fact that I can shoot @ 1600-3200 ISO with basically little or no visible noise. The problem is I have exceeded my budget this year, so In order to get the 85L, I must sell my 5DII and use the remaining funds to buy a 5DC. The other option would be to keep my 5DII and just purchase the 85 1.8.

Do you think trading essentially my 5DII for an 85L is a good move? I shoot mostly portraits and will most likely do engagement sessions as well.

Pls help!!! Lol

I say either buy the 1.8 or just continue saving til you can buy the 1.2L.

The 85L is a special lens so I voted for it.

Practically you should keep the 5d2 and get an 85 f1.8, but if you feel that the 1 stop faster 85L is worth it then go for it.

I've had both. The AF and CA are bad enough on the 85L that it's too expensive for me at least. I'd rather have the 5Dii's noise handling and the faster AFing lens.

how about this option.

Wait for an 85L mk I to show up for sale (they are around 1100-1300 used) and buy that instead? It's about half as much as the mkII.

i voted for the 5Dc+85L.

honestly.. if you're only doing portrait work, the original 5D and the 85L are an amazing combination. i personally on find the 5D2 a better choice if you need the high ISO performance, and want to use the video functions. in terms of image quality though, you'll be hard pressed to find a pairing that delivers results as well as the aforementioned.

Also, life after orchiectomy is also not so bad as long as you dont wear tight pants.

1.2 to 1.8 is a stop right? So with this ONE lens you've basically negated the ISO advantage on the 5Dii over the 5D? If you're JUST shooting portraits, then the 5Dc/85L might win. But yeah, having owned both lenses and both bodies, I've CHOSEN to not keep the 85L. To expensive -vs- the amazing 85mm 1.8 for what you get. Might just be the way I shoot, but the CA killed me with the L... Anything slightly out of focus has major purple fringing on it in bright conditions. And the AF was slow enough the one wedding I took it to (as a guest) it was having issues in lower light locking on fast enough.

Bingo.

Have you seen Rolando Gomez's work? Check his book for Techniques for Glamour Photography and you'll see that most of his work there was done using a 5DC and 85L combo, just absolutely stunning in terms of IQ.

Im not a non L lens snob but I have to say that a 5DMII and 85 1.8 combo cannot beat a 5DC + 85 1.2 simply because the non L stops at 1.8. The magical blur is not a hype. It truly exists @ 1.2.

Its weird. people always say, best lens over body but the poll so far is advising to keep the better body and great lens over a good body and excellent glass.

makes you wonder how many have actually used both doesn't it?

the issue here is the 85mm 1.8 IS good/great glass. It's just different than the 1.2.

I tried both and decided the 85L was the lens for me. On a 1 series body it focuses very accurately and decently fast enough to where I have rarely missed a shot due to slow focus. I have not tried it for sports though.

85 1.8 is great for what it sells but I never liked the colors and natural contrast (that 85L comes with).

I'd go for 5D+85L II.
