I've been out of the market for a do-it-all zoom for a while now so I'm not quite up to speed on the current choices out there. Here's the scoop...

I set up a friend of my wife with an XTi and an 18-55 IS. She is having fun with it but wants more reach. Initially I figured the 55-250 IS was perfect, but I think it's out of her price range. I think she wants to spend around $300 max, and used is probably fine.

Sigma, Tamron, Canon, whatever. She is a true soccer mom and wants more reach. I'd push her towards a 70-200 f/4, but again, I think that's out of her budget.

Any suggestions? I think she wants no less than 200mm on the long end, but the short end is fairly open (as long as it compliments her 18-55). IS is always nice, but I think price is more important that stabilization. She is a green boxer as well.

Thanks much!

If the 55-250 is out of the price range, then I don't think there's anything decent out there. It goes for $175 NEW if you look at the right places.

I see that now! What was I looking at? I thought it was a 55-250 IS for around $600....

The 18-200mm IS and 70-300mm IS are both around $500-600. Maybe you saw one of those.
