If you could have gotten the composition of the first one with the DOF of the second I think you'd have a great shot. The first is still good but I think bokeh is a little extreme / DOF a little shallow. You have a very small and very apparent oval of in focus area. Also, I'd tweak white balance slightly to the warmer side, and maybe up the color saturation a tad to get the green in the eye to pop a little more.

Also, sharpness isn't terrible but not breathtaking either....though this is likely a limitation of the lens you had available...or the low aperture setting. If you could get the same exposure with maybe 5.6 or higher, I think you'd see some better sharpness even with your lens options, but again this may be limited to your available light source. On camera flash might look a little harsh, but a bounced or softened hot shoe flash would make everything a bit more luminous and allow you to go with a larger aperture.

I'd also crop out about a third of the first picture on the right hand side. You've got too much wall, and not enough subject.

I did a quick edit that I can post if you'd like to see it, but since you don't have image editing enabled I can't post it without your permission. Let me know. It's just some subtle tweaks but I think they help.

These were quick and dirty just to give you an idea. Probably overdid it a hair on the first one with the saturation. Anyway, rotated, cropped, sharpened, adjusted whit balance, contrast, and saturation.
