Well I knew they'd be expensive, and I know they'll come down a bit after the rush has subsided, but WOW. How will they compete with Nikon when their lenses cost TWICE as much? Current preorder prices advertised in UK (£1 = $1.53 today).
Mark III extenders - £550 each
EF8-15/4L fisheye - £1499
EF70-300/4.5-5.6L IS - £1599 (considerably more than the DO, never mind the current 70-300IS)
EF300/2.8L IS II - £7499
EF400/2.8L IS II - £11499

I know the MTF charts look fantastic, but I'm concerned Canon might price themselves out of reach even for pros at these prices. If the 500 and 600 updates are the same (and why wouldn't they be?) I'll probably have to give up on my hope of ever getting myself a new one.

Mark.

EF70-300/4.5-5.6L IS - £1599

Seriously? Holy crap. In Canada, we always complain about how much more we pay in comparison to Americans. But wow. This is just unprecedented.

Everybody seems too quick on this to judge on "list price". I would expect street prices to be lower, as they have in the past. Take a look at the UK conversion price! If the TC's are $500 US, they will be about 325 pounds in the UK, as the pound is 1.53 to the dollar.

Canon 50D gripped, EF 50/1.8, EF-S 10-22, 17-40L, 24-105L, 70-200 f/2.8L, 100/2.8 macro, 100-400L, 300 2.8L, Canon 500 f8 mirror with chipped EF mount, 580EX, 1.4x and 2x Canon teleconverters, Canon EF Life-Size converter.

One would think that, unfortunately it does not work like that.

Rip-off Britain as usual. iPad as an example. Us Price is $499USD, and the UK price?.... £429GBP!

I'm pretty much used to it now. Don't really buy the latest and greatest any more but tend to wait for a used item to crop up or for prices to tumble.

UK prices is almost the same as Australia prices.

And retailers complain why everyone buys overseas or from HK.

If they will cost 325 $ then probably they will cost 325 punds in UK as usually we are getting 1:1 prices here in Europe compared to US Punds or Euros no matter.

Have an American friend?

Step 1: Buy from B&H on the cheap.
Step 2: Ship to trustworthy friend.
Step 3: Make it worth his while to ship item to UK as "gift".
Step 4: Profit.

I'll either do this, or simply buy it myself on a trip back home. UK prices are absurd.

I have but , in Poland i can't use USA guarantee so if anything happens i can either pay loads of money for repair or use it as very expensive paper stample :)

They'll come down a lot more than 'a bit'. Just look at the Mk1 versions of these lenses - they all sell for around 64% of the RRP. And that's at a big store - check out Park Cameras, they give the RRP and the retail price for easy comparison.

And it doesn't take long for the price to drop. Take the 70-200 MkII which is now 67% of the RRP at Park.

As for Rip-Off Britain (© Daily Mule) - let's look at the new 70-200. In the US it's $2300 from B&H - about £1500. Add on the duty (6.7%) and VAT (17.5%) and you get to £1880. Cost at Park is £1900. Wow! What a difference. Yes, you can get it cheaper if you want to break the law - anything from £1620 by smuggling to £0 by stealing.

While we're on the subject, what is the reason why UK prices are so much higher than the US? I moved here about 2 months ago and still can't figure it out.

When compared to other retail items, the disparity among camera gear and other electronics is astonishing, and I simply do no understand why. Not even accounting for your ridiculous VAT, still prices are sky high.

UK Prices are on the rise! Its not only the Canon Stuff; if you look at the Apple gear, the price of a Macbook or a Macbook Pro is the same in dollars as it would be here in the UK in £££.

The issue is the import duties and taxes.

Isn't it amazing that we have to give away our hard earned cash to some politician's decision? and when it all goes wrong and hits the fan, it is the good public that have to pay out and bail them out again!
What do they do in other counties where everything is not so over priced!?
