"Don't go out in the falling rain!"

Finals day at the Hataitai Netball Courts this weekend and there was a torrential downpour.

It got so dark they had to turn the lights on at midday and I had to shoot at 1600 ISO. Horrible conditions for playing sport but the players played bravely on! In contrast, I kept nice and dry under the club veranda. Amazingly in about half an hour the clouds disappeared and it turned from cloudy horrible day to hot beautiful day. Wellington is such an unpredictable city...

...sorry, I shouldn't be so flippant, but I couldn't resist! Netball is the premier women's sport over here in NZ, with over 120,000 registered players. It has its roots in basketball: with the key difference being that you can't move with the ball in hand, only pass. NZ, Australia, South Africa, England and Jamaica are the big participants. It can be played either indoors or outdoors: however the more important the match the more likely to be indoors. (There hasn't been an outdoor test match in decades from memory)

How you'd keep your gear dry? Gotta love the spirit of the women for the game, you caught it well. Never seen a match but would love to.

A bunch of equipment with Canon on it and some stuff with Sigma on it. The desire to capture a moment in time and share it with you! :)

...I hid! In the below picture can you see the building? I was close to where the guy in blue was, just a bit more to the right. There was hardly any wind so I was protected from the rain: unlike the poor players who got absolutely drenched...

Netball is played in the States: if you could track down a match it would be fantastic to see some shots!

Thanks for the link, I've saved it and will check it from time to time for a match in my area. If I get to attend a match I'll post some photos. Again my thanks and keep posting images, just love the focus on these young ladies! You captured them well!

Excellent first photo, captured the conditions perfectly. Lucky you had the veranda, much easier than an umbrella, especially in Wellington.

1dxmk2 and 3, with EOS-1D R and 5d4. Sigma Art 20mm & 35mm f1.4, Canon 135 mm f2L, 24-70 f2.8ii, 85 f1.4, 70-200 f2.8L is, 100-400 mk2 and 600ex.

...thanks man, but I gotta say I had it easy compared to the girls on the court. I've done a few soccer games with a Pack 'n Save bag and a rubber band around the camera to keep the rain off, but that wouldn't have protected the camera this day!

Nice job with these BB.
I would have much rather been you than them.

Hahaha...
Kiwi humour at its best.
Almost as good as Aussie humour.

Also the court is divided into thirds, with the seven players having set positions.
Players are only allowed to go into specific parts of the court depending on their positions.
It is also a non contact sport - although you'd never know that at the top (international) level, especially when Australia and New Zealand are playing each other.

How good is this thread, I'm guessing a whole lot of blokes talking up women's sport.

And so they (we) should.
Most blokes don't appreciate how physically demanding a game of netball can be.
It might only be four 15 minute quarters but it's usually at a frenetic pace, especially at the top level.
It's got to be one of the best womens sports around - there's nothing better than a good close netball match.
