I do want a high quality digital camera that has excellent photography capabilities, to include a larger sensor, without having to get a DSLR kit. My stepson has the right priorities, he has an SD1100 for basic photography and a $700 HD Canon video camera to take lots of excellent video of their son, now 18 months old.

If you want a good compact the S95 and Lx5 are both very good. I have both ( well my wife got the S95 ) and for a point and shoot they exceed my expectations. Website

If they made a really good G series their Rebel sales would probably tumble. Think about it, they don't want competition amidst their own product line.
