Hey everyone,

I'm doing my second wedding mid-October. The first one was last minute and thankfully, was not a victim of Murphy's Law.

Anyway, I'm looking to add a second body for this one. I currently have a 5dmkii.

I wish I can afford a 5dmkii but what do you think of the 5d as the second camera. I wanted a full frame and this is my only other option. Will this camera be the easiest to get used to (except for another 5dmkii)?

As far as lenses, I have the Sigma 24-70 HSM, Sigma 50, and the 135L.

I was thinking of dedicating one camera with the 135L and the other with the Sigma 50. What do you think of this setup? The bride said I shouldn't be too intrusive because she hated it when she attended a wedding and the photographer was all over the place.

I have a 580EX II but I will try to get a hold of another one by then. I still have to scout the location. Will take photos of the interior and surrounding areas for the group shots. I hope there's a high point somewhere for me to stand on so I don't have to bring a ladder.

Thanks

I think a 7d would be most like a 5d2, wihout being a 5d2. It may even be a good option, especially ig she wants you to hang back and snipe. Its not full frame, but if i were to buy one, i wouldn't go backwards in technology. I know the 5d is still a great camera, but things like a newer lcd screen really mean a lot to me.

Kinda hard to avoid going backwards in technology with the canon line up if I have a 5d2 already (and I can't afford the later 1 series) but I know what you mean with the LCD screen. I was also considering memory card as well.

Just curious, how much memory do you all bring to a wedding?

I'd considered many a time going to a 5d, if you need something to hold you over consider getting a used body (40d seems to be the best bang for your buck) then trade up to a 2nd 5d2 when it seems appropriate. The crop might help you out with your 135l in ceremony shots, though I'm not the vet on that I can't be 100% confident.

Actually I was going to sell the 5d back again after these weddings. Maybe I should just get another 5d2 since I am going to just sell it back anyway. ::lightbulb:: the only concern with this option is I would be tying up twice as much funds and less room to play with for other necessary equipment.

Why buy and resell when you can rent?

I started thinking about it more and for my needs I am now leaning towards the 7D because it will replace my 40D. Having a full frame and a cropped frame combo can be very valuable! I was originally looking at the 5DII and I want to get it someday to replace my 5Dc. But the more I think about it (in the past 5 minutes) the more I want a cropped frame camera as well.

I think it is cheaper to buy. Anyone else agree? I can have the equipment longer and still be able to sell it for about the same that I paid for it.

I'm no math whiz but I'm pretty sure if you're only using this for one wedding renting is going to be cheaper way to go ;) On the other hand if you're planning on more than a couple weddings buying becomes more advantageous.

Yeah I have at least two and one is coming up REAL soon. I think buying is still cheaper...depending on the person selling, maybe it's just me.

If you buy used, then you should be able to sell for about the same as you paid (minus PP and shipping) and that would be cheaper than renting - especially if the two weddings means two rentals.

If buying new, then it's a little closer, but still buying new would probably work out better than renting twice.
