Sony-sensor'd DSLRs: D100, D200, D70, D70s, D50, D40, D40x, D60, D80, D90, D300, D300s, D3000, D5000, D3x, D2x, K-x, K-r...that's a lot of successful non-Sony cams with Sony sensors...I'm sure the D3100 and D7000 will also be successful. ;)

Pentax K-x and K-r are also Sony fab'd. The only other DSLR companies are oly/panasonic and samsung, and oly/panasonic use a different format...Nikon, Canon and Pentax are, IMO, the major DSLR makers...2/3 use Sony CMOS in several bodies...successfully. Of the NIkon lineup, only the D700/D3/D3s sensor is claimed to be a Nikon piece...even the D3000 has a Sony CCD.

I didn't know the Pentax K-x had a Sony sensor--thanks for that info. No wonder it blows the doors off the Samsung sensor in the K-7 then. I was really close to getting a K-7 until I saw the hot mess it is at ISO 3200. That Samsung sensor is also why their 1.5x mirrorless cameras don't show significant improvement in noise over the 2x sensor Micro 4/3 cameras from Olympus and Panasonic, which is pretty sad when you think about it. Not that the m4/3 sensors are awful--I have one and am happy with it for what it is--but a 1.5x should beat a 2x by default. If the upcoming K-5 has a Sony sensor, Pentax might come into play for me again.

Yeah, that samsung 14.6 is bags of fail in the NX line too.

It's not a dslr, but the Leica X1 also uses a Sony DX size CMOS.

Yeah, why to people say: "Nikon uses Sony sensors" like that's a kind of insult? Sony video camera sensors are awesome and obviously their DSLR sensors work very well (in a Nikon). ;) :)

It's an insult in the "you can't even make your own sensors... dur, dur, dur" sense--just people looking for something to sneer at. Nevermind that most manufacturers outsource other camera components like the LCD (I think Sony dominates there too), battery, etc.

Radio Shack can make sensors for my cameras for all I care as long as they work.
Who the hell cares?

When Canon releases new DSLRs they like to point out that their sensors are designed and developed by them and not a third party. Gives them the ability to do what they want in that development versus dealing with restriction of a sensor that is developed by a third party. This doesn't mean the Sony sensors are crap but the Canon system as a whole is more of an original product.

However, what nikon has done on thier own D700/D3/D3s (especially the D3s) is down right great in my opinion. Imagine if they did the whole line on thier own. It would be epic!

True. This also means Canon will push the boundaries when it comes to MPs. Sometimes a little too much. Nikon are much more conservative when it comes to this area.

I would honestly take lower mps for better high ISO performance... well i mean i did, but i would do it again without any hesitation.

this is the thing that interests me with the d7000:

The text from Amazon:

"D700 Highlights
Coupled with 14-bit A/D conversion (12-bit selectable), the D7000 produces stunning images that are richer in tone and detail than previously possible in DX format. The A/D conversion happens within the sensor, thereby maintaining exceptional image integrity without sacrificing shooting speed or energy efficiency. Combine these with the agile DX format and its signature 1.5x focal length telephoto potential and you can begin to see where this kind of shooting power can take you.

Improved image quality and speed: EXPEED 2 image processing engine
Improved image quality

Sometimes you want to capture the subtle tones of a sunset. Other times you want to freeze the action. The D7000 delivers both, thanks to the newest generation of image processing engine, EXPEED 2, which performs multiple tasks with more speed and power. Expect smoother tonal gradations, even in difficult shadows and highlights, for a greater sense of depth in your images. Shoot continuously at 6 frames per second so you can capture the action you’ve been missing. Focusing performance such as face recognition in Live View mode is also further improved, letting you concentrate on your composition. "

If I understand this right, are what they offer in the new D7000, the ability with one shot to achieve a shot from a sunset, that so far was only possible with three shot? Have they managed to give a broader dynamic range on the new body? If so, than that is definently a big step forward. More dynamic range is definently on my wish list for the next update on canon bodys.

I am a happy giver, so if you find any misspelling in my text, you can keep them... :)

it's probably some pseudo-HDR stuff you can manage with tweaking histograms and graduated filters. the sony line of CMOS and CCD sensors nikon uses has a bit better DR out of the camera vs canon, too, so i assume it's a software trick.

nothing you can't do with photoshop and lightroom.

^- true, cant wait to see samples

My local store said end of October for D7000s...

Im seriously going to give it a looksie....I kinda have been contemplating the switch for years now, While the D7000 isnt the OMG BEST body EVER in Nikon's lineup or even necessarily equivalent to my 7D, I'm switching more for lenses than i am the body...and all i really want is a decent capable body close enough to the 7D to not bug me until i can upgrade it...and the D7000 looks to fit the bill (And the only big sacrifice is possibly build and 2fps..i think i can kinda live with that)

Finally manual exposure for video and .mov format (perhaps h.264 like canon). Nikon still fails though.
