I currently do not have a camera. I have been waiting to see what was released and the reviews of each. I have owned and shoot both Nikon and Canon. Although the Nikon D7k will have to be a breathe of fresh air for me to get it over a Canon body. I initially made the switch from Nikon to Canon because of the lens selection. This Nikon looks amazing by it's specs and Nikon has some amazing lenses. Even though I'm comfortable with each brands ergonomics; I prefer Canon's since I can use one hand.

I will say that I understand everyones' arguments about the 60D and D7k, but I hope (and know) both will do well.

^- true, cant wait to see samples

My local store said end of October for D7000s...

Im seriously going to give it a looksie....I kinda have been contemplating the switch for years now, While the D7000 isnt the OMG BEST body EVER in Nikon's lineup or even necessarily equivalent to my 7D, I'm switching more for lenses than i am the body...and all i really want is a decent capable body close enough to the 7D to not bug me until i can upgrade it...and the D7000 looks to fit the bill (And the only big sacrifice is possibly build and 2fps..i think i can kinda live with that)

i love it. i still am not sure if i want it or the d300s replacement.

I've tried to make this point over and over. Every reviewer says Nikon ergonomics is better. They like to point at the three button knoby thing on the top left of the camera. I just laugh. Because to use that you have to remove your hand from the lens. But on my Canon 5D the AF/WB/Drive/ISO/Metering/Compensation and flash compensation can all be done with one hand.

I'm not seeing the advantage. Also the Wheel on the back is much faster for going through menus. I don't get it.

What can the D300 replacement do that this doesn't. Sure it will have 51pt AF, but unless it has other features like 720p60p. It only other advantage is 7fps. Which off course is only an advantage if it actually works. So many times a Nikon will loose fps when not shooting in specific modes. My friend has a D300 and he lost fps and wasn't even shooting RAW.

i don't think the d300s replacement will offer me more than the d7000 can. and it's a good step up over the d200 for not that much change. i just need to convince my fiancee that 1200 bucks for a camera is a "justifiable" expense given that i just dropped 1100 dollars on lenses.

as for the nikon ergo, notice that there is no dedicated button for metering, WB, AF, etc. it's just dual controls behind the LCD screen that are teensy and easy to mistake for one another--or at least for me they were and why i ultimately went from a 40d to a d200.

the two rotary dials on the upper right body (which can be customized for shutter and aperture--and reversed), dedicated ISO, WB, and metering settings, and easy to switch S, C, M AF just make more sense to my brain. i also like the location of the DOF button and the customizable button right below it i can use to quickly shutter through non CPU lenses.

I dunno if its an advantage/disadvantage issue, but more of a preference and comfort (stemming from familiarity). You don't get it cuz you are used to Canon's layout. Nikon users don't get it cuz they are used to Nikon's layout.

FWIW, the D7k doesn't have the "three button knoby thing on the left" like the Dxxx/Dx series does. The D7k has a button centered in the AF/MF switch on the left-lower/mount area (as you hold the lens), a DOF-preview on the right-lower-front area and a customizable button on the right-upper-front area. The two on the right can be actuated with right-hand fingers (I use middle and ring fingers for these) while retaining a normal grip on the camera and keeping your "finger on the trigger", while the new left AF button can be accessed via your left thumb, while holding the base of the lens (or the whole lens in the case of most normal/wide lenses). I like the ergonomics of the Nikon...then again, I had no problems with the Canon ergonomics either.

I'm kinda in the middle, I learned on Nikons and even though its been about 5 years since i owned one, i still find myself struggling with remembering which button does what without looking at them..

There are aspects i like, but theres also aspects i hate...For one, Canon's DOF preview button is in the WRONG place and has been in the wrong place for a LONG time, the 7D's is absolutely appalling and its a control i use VERY frequently..

Nikon its to the RIGHT of the lens mount, you extend your finger and can easily depress it, Canon's is on the left side and on the 7D is practically flush with the damn body with no nub or anything to find where it is, Causes me a lot of frustration, especially with a longer lens attached because i have to move my hand back to try to find it...when im using my 100-400 at full rack this is a very unbalanced load!

(Ok i admit, i know the 1D and the EOS-3 had the button on the right too, BUT most of the Canon dslrs have it on the left for NO reason whatsoever)

I really like Nikon's joypad over Canon's joystick, Not that the joystick is horrible i just dont like it as much...

Canon has nicer menus by far though...

I'm 110% happy with my 7D. But there is no way I can recommend any budding photographer to buy a 60D or maybe even a 7D over the D7000. I'm too entrenched in Canon gear now to switch, but if I was starting out now I would go Nikon. :(

If only Nikon could be bothered to release a lens even vaguely competitive with Canon's 85 f/1.8.

An Ai tab around lens mount... really...? That's so cool. And AF screwdriver. So basically you can use most of the glass made since 1959 (if it has been Ai modified) and have metering too.

Yeah the Nikon mount continuity is often touted by the likes of KR -- but seriously, why would I *want* to use a lens from 1959? Anything that lacks decent AF is completely useless to me, and that includes the screw-focus lens I've tried (their steampunk 85 f/1.8).

If new canon lenses are quite high, then new nikon lenses are downright unobtainable...over $2k for a 35/1.4 AF-S?? Gimme a break.

Canon's is >$1400 and has been out for a while. Maybe street price will drop on Nikon's over time, but both are still bloody expensive.

And to think the 35L used to go for about $1100. Stupid recession.

it's probably some pseudo-HDR stuff you can manage with tweaking histograms and graduated filters. the sony line of CMOS and CCD sensors nikon uses has a bit better DR out of the camera vs canon, too, so i assume it's a software trick.

nothing you can't do with photoshop and lightroom.

One can do multi-frame blending HDR in Lightroom? I don't see that ability in mine.

Hmm i would be intrested to know that as well since ive never seen an option for it. I always select the images i want in lightroom and then select edit in Photoshop which does the blending and then i save it which jumps me back to lightroom. This preserves the stacking in lightroom.
