You can always wait and see what the Sigma 85 1.4 is like. That will be on Canon AND Nikon. :D

... and at a price that is also the sum of the the Canon AND Nikon :(

The price on B&H for the Sigma is $899USD
The 85L is $1949
The Nikon 85 1.4G is $1699

That's not even close IMHO.

Oh wait, you meant the cheaper ones... sorry.

Yeah the 85 1.8 from Canon is $379.95
The Nikon is $399.95

So more than double... (though the Sigma is really in a different class).

So yeah, if you look at it that way, you're right. :)

I like the look of a D7000 and the new 28-300mm lens as an ideal walkabout street unit, very tempting indeed.

I wish Canon would update the 28-300mm L as I hate the weight of it and the push pull design. The new Nikon lens is a beauty.

The Nikon also costs half as much in this case ;)

The 28-300 impressed me, its VERY good for a superzoom....in fact given the closeness in price i could -almost- argue the 24-120 f/4 wasnt necessary....

But then again, id probubly get the 24-120..

Not crazy about a 28-300 on a cropper as an all-in-one walkaround zoom, but some people don't need the wide end I guess.

Yeah that would leave you with 42mm equivalent on the wide end...I tend to shoot a lot of things in the 20-40mm range when indoors...

True, but Nikon also has the -very- good 18-200.... :)

I rarely go below 50mm shooting street candids so for me it would be a no brainer, the perfect combo that I've longed for with Canon. I guess I could take along a G12 or similar if I needed wider.

It's an added bonus for street use that the Nikon lens is black (and fairly small). I'm edging towards selling my 7D and a lens or two and getting this D7000.

Yep, thanks. The 85L/new Nikon may be fine lenses for some purposes, but I can't justify the expense for shooting my toddler -- and from what I read, the AF on the 85L wouldn't be up to it anyway. I don't need f/1.2 or even f/1.4 -- f/1.8 is often too shallow and I stick with f/2.5 and above when shooting him most of the time. I use the 85 f/1.8 for the AF speed. Sometimes it's a little longer indoors than I'd like, but getting the focus is what's important, and f/4 on my 24-105 often won't give me a fast enough shutter.

yeah the 5DII and kids don't mix well (the focus can't track well enough.

If you want a good kids body, go for the D700 IMHO. Much better subject tracking.

BUT that would mean a switch.

Well very little money wise.

Less lenses though.
