isnt the 50mm f/1.4G not the fastest lens in the shed when it comes to AF?
The 50G and the 35G are a bit slow to AF, yes. The 35/2 AFD and 50/1.4 AFD are noticeably faster on Dxxx and Dx bodies.

That's pretty sad. 5D2, 24-105L, 85mm f/1.8, MP960, HG21, crumbling G6+R72, Brownian toddler

Most implements are much faster than the canon AFD lenses, particularly on a Dx or Dxxx body that houses a faster screw AF motor than the Dxx line. AngryCorgi

Screwdrive isnt necessarily slow, I know a few of the Minolta HS-geared lenses were rediculously quick (On the same level as the USM-driven Canon lenses of the day) Gear, New and Old! RAW Club Member

True enough, my old N70 was slow as %^*% most of the time, my 35-70 wasnt bad though XD Gear, New and Old! RAW Club Member
