The 50G and the 35G are a bit slow to AF, yes. The 35/2 AFD and 50/1.4 AFD are noticeably faster on Dxxx and Dx bodies.

You'd be surprised how fast some screw-driven lenses are. Most implements are much faster than the canon AFD lenses, particularly on a Dx or Dxxx body that houses a faster screw AF motor than the Dxx line.

I'm hoping for a huge surprise...maybe, just maybe the D7k will have the faster motor in it...I wouldn't bet on it, but there is always the possibility.

Screwdrive isnt necessarily slow, I know a few of the Minolta HS-geared lenses were rediculously quick (On the same level as the USM-driven Canon lenses of the day)

Some of the screwdrive stuff will actually torque twist in your hand, Those little motors arent as slow as some people think...

And when it comes to third party lenses, id rather have Nikon screwdrive over the cheapo micromotors in some lenses :/

And keep in mind both the 35mm f/1.8 and 50mm f/1.4 are fast lenses with shallow DOF, They likely focus slowly intentionally, giving up a few milliseconds in focus speed for better accuracy....Canon's 85mm f/1.2 and 50mm f/1.2 arent speed kings here either you know...

it's not terribly slow. and i agree with you, the inclusion of screw drive means that i don't have to use the crappy motors in third party lenses.

it's perfect for my 50 f/1.8, tho, and makes the lens light and cheap. like all things, it has its place. fast glass should have an ultrasonic motor, but glass for portraiture or lanscapes can get away with screw drive. and to be fair, some of canon's EF-S lenses with US motors aren't all that fast.

i do use a dxxx body, tho.

True enough, my old N70 was slow as %^*% most of the time, my 35-70 wasnt bad though XD

Though then again, it had ONE focus point, one, in the center of the viewfinder...xD We're not talking a very advanced AF here

The D70 was better, and my first AF-S/USM drive lens was the 18-70 it came with! In fact thats the lens that made me really want AF-S!

I pre-ordered. If I pick up a decent lens I'll be able to do a comparison between this and the 7D.

Because they came up with the 70-200 VR Back then, it was all DX with no plans about FX, so it didn't matter. When the FX D3 came out, people started screaming about the 70-200's corners being dark and all mush. Some people even switched back to the 80-200 AF-S to avoid this. The funny thing now is that Nikon released the 70-200 VR2 - and the barrel looks exactly like an 80-200. It's as if they took an 80-200 AF-S, put VR on it and jacked up the price to $2K. I think that the VR2 is an improvement over the old 80-200 AF-S, just not sure if it's worth $1K of improvements. My 2 c.

How loud are the screwdrive lenses? I'm thinking of picking up at D7000 just for fun. I love my 135L and 85/1.8 though, so fast and silent.

It depends on the body, Not the lens..

some of the bodies, like the D300 are decently quiet actually, Much quieter than say, an AFD lens (like the 35/2) and maybe equal to a good micromotor..

Some of the other bodies are like someone screeching..but i dont think those bodies are current ones

my d200 is no louder than a non-usm lens for a nikon 50 1.8, nikon 85 1.8, and weird tamron 18-250 superzoom thing i got as a gift and had to take on vacation. all three lenses are very fast, too.

my friend's d80 sounds like a bad car starter, i honestly think that the motors in those models aren't as fast or as good.

that's good to know. The 35/2 canon is pretty dang loud, but I can deal with it. I don't need silence, but the quieter the better.

I only have one lens that is "loud" when AFing...my sigma 24/2.8 macro...it makes a grating sound...
