Echoing everyone else, Thanks Mike for taking the tim and effort to get us in gear for submitting to this competition in teh first place!

I think we have done amazingly well to place in the top half of the league (were we still top 10?). Especially since some of these clubs have been participating for the previous few years and knew how to play the system.

Next year we shall pwn them all ;)

We did very well to win a category, espesh since looking at most of the winning monthly submissions they relied on one photographer who's a specialist in that area for all their images (Great Notley in the Black and white for example, were all photos taken by the guy that won best overall photo, with black and white portraits of homeless people) Speaking to the bloke who runs it, it seems next year of the 3 images they will have to be taken by at least 2 photographers.

Looking at the submissions I think next year we can plan better how to score higher, knowing what the judges like.

Spreading the entries to have them from more than 1 tog will certainly be a better idea - I'd noticed that some entries for each round were from just 1 tog.

Swaffs wrote in post #11427097 (external link)
To be honest, the Judges did not make any comments on the images, I did however make a video of the presentation showing the top ten clubs overall scores and they displayed about 5 or 6 top images from each of those clubs.
I'll stick it on Youtube when I figure out how.

We should definitely go out next year and shoot for the competition rather than trawling our archives too. We did really well this year, you wait until next year :)

Absolutely, shooting for the comp will be a good idea, maybe we can try and schedule meets for some of them to bounce creativity around.

On the downside you'll be sad to hear they had the new 300 and 400 F2.8 IS L II's on show! They are so light its unbelievable! The 400 is handholdable the 300 you could lift with a finger!

I'm off to buy more lottery tickets!

BIG THANKS TO MIKE FOR SORTING BOTC!

You're welcome, and I have my lottery ticket already!! :D

Phnom Pehn is ok but if you're heading over there, best to go to Siem Reap instead if you can ... much more intesting ... but I don't know the other route so maybe that hold more interest ...

Just my 2p worth!
Enjoy either way!

Just looked through his gallery.

I personally do not like that style at all! Just goes to show it is horse for courses though in this world doesnt it. And that by making a noisy image black and white and imitating grain to make it your "style" you can get away with murder.

Blimey - and I was feeling proud of managing mince pies and chutney!!! I was in the US a few years ago at the end of November and all the shops had the kits to make gingerbread houses!!! Photos please :D

Yea, I've always done kits as well apart from when I was a kid and my mom made all of the bits for us. It's a bit ambitious, but the girlfriend has never built one before and is quite keen :)

Then that's definitely a good reason to try one ... as I say ... pictures please :D ... never been quite that ambitious but as I have taken an extended break this year, I'll try and plan out some extra cooking for week after next ... not sure that'll mean a gingerbread house ... but maybe some cookies, and cakes etc. Stuff that I'll regret in January ;)

Agreed. I may have just found the incentive to get off my butt and out into the cold ot photograph things. So lacking motivation lately.

Agree with this too. If all my wedding shots came back as B&W I wouldn't have been happy. As it stands we weren't happy with the shots from our wedding anyway, but I guess that's the problem with going with the lowest bidder
Was also surprised to see so many getting ready shots where the bride is in her underwear or less - is that normal? For the 2 weddings we've done the brides have been pretty modest, and that's with my wife as the photographer too.

He was actually advocating this as his style in that he claims he eases into the background so people don't notice he is there, and allows him to get shots that no one else does..... apparently

Guess it depends on the bride too ... I've done a wedding where the bride wanted some .. umm .. "boudoir shots" taken before the wedding as she got ready, to give to her new hubby that were for their eyes only ... another bride was happy for me to shoot as she got dressed - but again wanted the shots to be for them only even though I waited till she was mostly in her dress before shooting ... not sure many brides would really want shots published of them semi naked... but some are probably all for it!

Hmmm.

Plenty of wedding togs get those kind of shots. I think it is more down to how open to the idea the bride is.

For an ambient light style of work , I much prefer that of Jasmine Stars images.

I checked Ascough's gallery and I mostly love his shots. There are hits and misses, of course. But I generally enjoy the way he frames them and how he captures the emotions or the little things happening during the big day.

I do think his "all ambient light" way of working does make for some overly noisy shots (especially those that remain in colour). Certainly to the point that it bothers me in several of them. But then again, the couples are less likely to mind grain than togs (after all, doesn't everyone who grew up in the film age pretty much expects grain in shots taken in dark conditions?). Also, those who chose him for a wedding are likely to have done so based on his gallery. So I doubt they will be shocked to get a lot of B&W images. If they hired him, they probably like his style...

As for the pictures of the bride getting ready, if she is OK with it, why not? It's her big day and those irreverent shots of the hidden side of the wedding day can make for nice memories or pics to share with the hubby too. :)

Wendy
